Tesla Recalls 3 Models of Its Electric Cars

Excitement at Tesla  (TSLA) - Get Free Report is growing as the electric vehicle maker prepares to bring its first Cybertruck pickups to market in about two months. The Austin, Texas, EV company's CEO Elon Musk has said the vehicle will be delivered at the end of the third quarter of 2023, most likely late September.

The EV industry's leader in production and deliveries has had a few setbacks, despite setting setting a record for deliveries in the first half of the year through June 30 with about 889,000 delivered.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in March opened an investigation into 100,000 Tesla 2023 Model Y SUVs over an issue with steering wheels coming off while driving.

Tesla Recalls 1,000s of Electric Vehicles 

The company next recalled 2,649 Tesla Model S vehicles in China that were produced in the company's Fremont, Calif., plant between Oct. 14, 2015 and Aug. 23, 2020. The safety recall was issued in March to fix a problem with the front trunk, or frunk, latch lock that could cause the front lid to pop open while driving. The frunk defect posed a safety risk, as forward visibility could be obstructed if the front trunk lid pops open while driving.

The Model S recall followed a previous recall for similar reasons on Dec. 31, 2021, when Tesla recalled 19,697 Model S vehicles in China that were manufactured between Jan. 21, 2015 and Nov. 18, 2020.

The company in May recalled about 1.1 million vehicles, with a production date between Jan. 12, 2019 and April 24, 2023, on Chinese regulators' orders for a software update that allowed for changes to braking methods and more warnings about the use of accelerator pedals. Regulators said it ordered a recall of some imported Model S, Model X, Model 3 and domestically produced Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. 

And now Tesla's 2023 Model S, Model X and Model Y electric vehicles face recalls, according to July 14 Safety Recall Report from the National Traffic Safety Administration, effecting 1,337 Model's S Model X and Model Y cars.

Tesla Cameras Need Repairs for Safety

The vehicles all have a similar defect as the pitch angle of the forward facing cameras may not be aligned to specification, which may cause certain active safety features to be unavailable, including automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning and lane keeping assist, without alerting the driver to their unavailability.

Unavailability of these certain active safety features, without alerting the driver that they are unavailable, may result in the driver relying on those features and could increase the risk of a collision, the report said.

Tesla identified 83 warranty claims and 2 field reports between June 8 and July 14, 2023 related to the defect, and the company is not aware of any crashes, injuries or deaths that might be related to the condition.

Tesla notified all stores and service centers on July 17, and vehicle owners will be notified on Sept. 12. Tesla Service will inspect the pitch angle of the forward-facing cameras for all vehicles in the recall and adjust them to specification as necessary. All repairs will be performed at no cost under warranty.
