Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma still great fielders, should be included in India's T20 World Cup squad: Sunil Gavaskar

With the T20 World Cup scheduled to take place later this year, the Team India management will have a tough task to select a strong squad for the marquee format. Things are bound to get trickier with stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli willing to take part in T20I cricket. A report published by news agency PTI recently claimed that both Kohli and Rohit are keen on being part of India’s T20 World Cup squad. Legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar recently shared his stance on this matter.

Gavaskar backed Rohit and Kohli’s inclusion in Team India’s T20 World Cup squad saying the two are not only key batters for their side but are also terrific fielders. “But what makes me feel good is their fielding capacity. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are still great fielders and will be of great help on the field,” the ex-India captain said, speaking on Star Sports.

“Kohli’s form has been outstanding in the last 1.5 years. He played unbelievably in the 2023 World Cup, making 750 runs with three centuries. So there is no doubt about his limited-overs batting,” Gavaskar added.

As per media reports, the Indian selectors may have a word with head coach Rahul Dravid, Test and ODI skipper Rohit and Kohli before announcing the squad for the T20Is against Afghanistan. The three-match T20I series between India and Afghanistan is scheduled to start on January 11 in Mohali. The selection committee will also have to take a call on Team India’s squad for the first two Tests against England. India’s five-match Test series versus England will begin on 25 January.

Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday announced the schedule for this year’s T20 World Cup which will jointly be hosted by West Indies and the USA. With India failing to win the ODI World Cup on home soil last year, they will now be aiming to put up a memorable show this time. At the T20 World Cup 2024, the Indian cricket team find themselves pooled in Group A along with arch-rivals Pakistan, Ireland, Canada and the USA, playing their first three games in New York City and the fourth one in Miami.
