When Aamir Khan gave 'negative feedback' about Anupam Kher's performance in Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahi

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt’s movie Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin hit theatres in 1991, and it has been over three decades since then. The film immediately became one of the most popular romantic comedies of its time and was an instant hit. The film revolves around the story of a rich girl who runs away to marry her lover, a movie star, however, ends up falling in love with a simple journalist. While Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt as Raghu and Pooja were all natural and spontaneous, it also features Anupam Kher who did a great job as Pooja Bhatt’s father, tickling our funny bone.

However, not many know that Aamir Khan once called out Kher’s loud performance in the film. The veteran actor recently sat down for a candid chat with the director Mahesh Bhatt on the 19th anniversary of the film Saaransh. It was during their conversation that the duo looked back at their film and also shared some interesting stories.

Mahesh Bhatt, Anupam Kher recall Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin days

They began by remembering an incident that took place on the sets of Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin when Aamir came forward to offer his negative feedback about Anupam Kher’s acting.

Kher while recalling coming for rehearsal on the first day of the shoot noted that his character was the world’s first dad who encouraged his daughter to bail on her own wedding. “It was when Mr Aamir Khan did his first scene with me…” he continued.

As Bhatt took over, he added, “He told me that Anupam was giving a very loud performance and I felt that since a co-actor had brought this up, I should mention it to Anupam. He took me aside, and…” and also imitated the self-assured gesture that Kher had made to him to reassure that he was sure of what tone to take in the performance.

“I said okay, and that character made the role what it was,” Bhatt concluded.

In the meantime, the actor-filmmaker duo were also speaking about their hit film Saaransh. While Mahesh Bhatt was seen praising Anupam Kher for his dedication as an actor in Saaransh, Kher also expressed his gratitude saying that he owes Rs 50,000 as a Guru Dakshina to the filmmaker.
