Who is Dr Balram Bhargava, role played by Nana Patekar in Vivek Agnihotri’s The Vaccine War | Explained

Presently, Dr Balram Bhargava, a professor of cardiology at AIIMS Delhi and and former director general of Indian Council of Medical Research. According to reports, Dr Balram Bhargava is a mission driven, results oriented health professional with more than 35 years of experience in leading medical research, strengthening health systems, health care innovation, managing pandemic preparedness and health care delivery in resource poor settings. As a global leader he has been in the forefront of south-south cooperation, promoting equity in access to health care, democratisation of scientific research and promoting public-private cooperation to bring new technologies and affordable innovative products into the health systems.

He has led India’s Department of Health Research as its Secretary and Director-General of the Indian Council of Medical Research. He is also a Professor of Cardiology at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi and serves as the Executive Director for Stanford India Biodesign Centre, School of International Biodesign (SiB).

His connection with the creation of the Indigenous COVID-19 Vaccine

He was then ICMR Chief who with his team fought like a warrior in inventing the Indigenous COVID-19 Vaccine. In Vivek Agnihotri’s The Vaccine War, Nana Patekar played the role of Dr Balranm Bhargava.

Patekar has completely nailed the role of ICMR Chief Balram Bhargava. He has shown how toxic the work environment can get. Playing the role of a completely toxic boss who doesn’t acknowledge the efforts of his juniors, he was able to bring out the true emotions of the character. He is a man with an old school thought process that if you appreciate the work of the juniors, they might stop working and believes in pushing his subordinates so that they achieve their goals fast. Not a bad human being, but a little too harsh and stingy when it comes to appreciating the efforts of the juniors.

As shown in the film, The Vaccine War, Balram Bhargava is a workaholic who doesn’t allow his people to get back home on time and doesn’t hesitate to call up at all odd hours, he is truly a man who is going to help you out when others are pointing fingers at you and that is clearly evident in the press conference conducted by the scientists. He believes and says in the film that if you are not able to set fire to the tail of the rocket and send it into the sky, you will have no idea of what we have done!
