Virat Kohli would have hoped to make India’s final league game of the ICC World Cup a memorable occasion by bringing up a record-breaking 50th ODI century against Netherlands in Bengaluru on Sunday.

Kohli missed out on the record ton and his efforts with the bat was overshadowed by Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul’s centuries. The batting superstar however, ensured it would be a memorable Sunday for him in office regardless by achieving the rare feat of collecting a wicket off his part-time dibbly-dobbly seam bowling.

Kohli has scored more than 25,000 international runs in a stellar career so far but has only a handful of wickets across formats with his military-medium pace bowling, the action of which appears to be a mix between that of Chris Harris and Rashid Khan.

During the World Cup match against Netherlands his adopted home ground of the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday, he collected the ninth wicket of his international career and 16th across senior-level competitive cricket by dismissing opposition skipper Scott Edwards.

Edwards was looking to get a tickle on a delivery that was going down leg and would have been called a wide anyway, but did not get the connection needed to place it wide of the keeper for the ball to roll away to the fine leg fence. Instead, he got a feather edge, and keeper KL Rahul did the rest behind the stumps, grabbing the ball in a flash.

Kohli celebrated like he rarely has before while his teammates chuckled around him while also congratulating him for the wicket. And in the stands at the Chinnaswamy, Kohli’s home ground in the Indian Premier League, Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma, his wife, had a hearty laugh herself.

Kohli helped snap a budding partnership between Edwards and Sybrand Engelbrecht that was worth 39, with Edwards departing for 17, reducing Netherlands to 111/4.

The former Royal Challengers Bangalore captain was by no means the only part-timer to get a bowl; Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav would also get to roll them arms after Kohli.

India had earlier posted a humongous 410/4 on the board — their highest total of the ongoing tournament and their second-highest total in World Cup history — after electing to bat against the Netherlands.

Shreyas Iyer (128 not out) and KL Rahul (102) led the way with blazing tons, the latter smashing the fastest World Cup hundred by an Indian, while, the trio of Rohit Sharma (61), Shubman Gill (51) and Kohli (51) brought up their half-centuries. For Iyer, it was his first hundred in his maiden World Cup.

It was the first time in World Cup history that each member of the top four had gone past fifty in a single innings. And only the third time in the history of ODIs that every batter in the top five had collected fifty or more.
