Asia Cup 2023 Points Table: Bangladesh virtually confirm Super Four spot with 89-run win over Afghanistan

Pakistan on Saturday became the first team to enter the Super Four stage of the 2023 Asia Cup after their blockbuster Group A match against India got washed out in Kandy.

The Men in Green, who are hosting the event even if a majority of the games are taking place in Sri Lanka upon BCCI’s insistence, began their campaign with a sound 238-run thrashing of Nepal.

Rain would then play spoilsport in their blockbuster meeting with India on Saturday after their pace trio of Shaheen Afridi, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf helped bundle the Rohit Sharma-led side out for 266.

With four points to their name, Pakistan ensured it would not be dislodged from the top two spots in Group A, and thanks to their Net Run Rate following their lop-sided win over Nepal, they will likely finish on top.

Defending champions Sri Lanka would open their account the day after the Pakistan-Nepal clash with a five-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the ‘Naagin Derby’ after bowling the Tigers out for 164 in Pallekele.

Bangladesh, however, would bounce back in their next outing with an 89-run hammering of Afghanistan in Lahore following centuries from Mehidy Hasan Miraz (112) and Najmul Hossain Shanto (104) as well as Taskin Ahmed’s four-fer (4/44).

The tournament returns to the ODI format this year after having taken place in T20 mode in the UAE in 2022, effectively becoming a precursor to the ICC World Cup that takes place from 5 October to 19 November in India.

Asia Cup 2023: All you need to know

The tournament is also the first in Asia Cup history with matches taking place in multiple nations. While Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has retained the hosting rights for the tournament, quite a few matches including the final had to be moved to Sri Lanka after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refused to send the Indian team to Pakistan citing political tensions between the two nations.

With the tournament underway, we bring to you the points table for the group stage as well as the Super Fours:
