Asia Cup 2023 Points Table: India on top of Super Four standings with thumping win over Pakistan

India defeated Pakistan in a rain-marred Super Four contest of the Asia Cup in Colombo on Monday, winning by 228 runs.

Pakistan had won the toss and opted to field on Sunday, but heavy rain meant that the match had to be moved to reserve day on Monday.

On Sunday, India had posted 147/2 from 24.1 overs, and on Monday, centuries from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul led them to 356/2.

Pakistan collapsed in their reply, wrapping up for a paltry 128. Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf did not bat after the duo sustained niggles while fielding. Kuldeep Yadav picked five wickets.

The win meant India took top spot in the Super Four standings. India next play Sri Lanka on Tuesday, followed by Bangladesh on Friday.

Pakistan and India have qualified from Group A for the Super Four stage, while Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are the teams from Group B.

The tournament returns to the ODI format this year after having taken place in T20 mode in the UAE in 2022, effectively becoming a precursor to the ICC World Cup that takes place from 5 October to 19 November in India.

While Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has retained the hosting rights for the tournament, quite a few matches including the final had to be moved to Sri Lanka after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refused to send the Indian team to Pakistan citing political tensions between the two nations.
