Conrad Sangma, from defeat to a possible second term as chief minister

The 45-year-old has emerged as a powerful politician in his father's mould, growing stronger by the election. This election, his party seems likely to form a government in Shillong possibly with the BJP and the United Democratic Party in tow as the three previous allies inch to cross the half-way mark in the 60-strong assembly.

Parleys have already been held in Guwahati earlier this week between him and BJP's pointsman in the northeast Assam chief minister Himanta Sarma, known for his deal-making abilities.

Earlier in the day, Sangma told newspersons, "I thank the people of our state for having voted for our party. We are grateful to them. We are still short of the numbers and are waiting for the final results, after which we will decide on the way forward."

Himanta Sarma: Deal-maker for a saffron sunrise in the northeast

The man who stitched together the various alliances which saw BJP's sun rising in the Northeast has done it again.BJP's poster boy from the region, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has emerged as the party's deal maker, flying almost on a daily basis to all the three states of the northeast where polls where held in February this year in between running his own state.

First by picking on Neiphiu Rio as the man to bank upon and piggyback to power for a second term in the insurgency ridden state of Nagaland and then by helping Delhi pick up the unassuming Manik Saha as the man who could undo the damage to the saffron party's popularity in the vital border state of Tripura.

Last, but not least by getting Conrad Sangma who broke off his NPP party's alliance with BJP just before the election to Meghalaya's assembly, back on the negotiating table for a possible tie-up with the right-wing party in case he fell short of the majority mark.

`Mr Clean' Manik Saha wins seat, possibly a second term as Tripura CM

Manik Saha, tipped to be Tripura's chief minister for a second term, on Thursday led his party the BJP to victory for a second term in the border state of Tripura.

The former Congress leader who joined the saffron party half-a-dozen years back defeated his former party's veteran leader Ashish Kumar Saha, by a margin of 1,257 votes from Town Bardowali despite detractors predicting a tough time for him in the prestigious constituency.

From Saha joining the saffron party in 2016 to being made chief minister last year in a brand renewal exercise last year, it has been a short but upward journey for the 69-year-old dental surgeon-turned-politician.

PM Modi expected to address BJP meeting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address BJP workers and supporters on Thursday as the party appeared set to retain power in Tripura on its own and with its senior ally Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party in Nagaland.

Official sources said Modi is likely to be felicitated for the victory at a meeting of senior party leaders at its headquarters.

The BJP's tally of seats, it has either won or is leading, stood at 33 in Tripura, according to the latest Election Commission figures for the polls to the 60-member assembly.

The corresponding tally for the party and its ally is 36 in Nagaland. In Meghalaya, the BJP was leading in three seats and may join hands with the NPP again to be part of the government like the last time.

Hekhani Jakhlau creates history by becoming first woman to be elected to Nagaland Assembly

Hekhani Jakhalu created history on Thursday by becoming the first woman to be elected to the Nagaland Assembly, officials said.

Jakhalu, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) candidate for the Dimapur III seat defeated her nearest rival Azheto Zhimomi of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) by 1,536 votes, the Election Commission of India, said.

Four women candidates, Hekhani Jakhaulu, Salhoutuo Kruse, Hukali Sema and Rosy Thompson, contested the Nagaland Assembly election this time.

Salhoutuo Kruse of NDPP is leading from Western Angami seat and BJP's Hukali Sema is also leading from Atoizu constituency as per EC website. PTI

Nagaland Election Results 2023

The ruling NDPP-BJP alliance won three seats and is leading in 35 seats in the Nagaland Assembly election, the Election Commission of India said on Thursday.

The Akuluto seat has been won uncontested by BJP nominee Kazheto Kinimi while BJP candidate P Bashangmongba Chang won the Tuensang Sadar-I seat and NDPP nominee S Keoshu Yimchunger won Shamator Chessore Assembly constituency in Nagaland, EC said.

The Republican Party of India (Athawale) which contested the Nagaland Assembly election for the first time won two seats - Tuensang Sadar II seat and Noksen constituency. PTI

The ruling BJP in Tripura was leading in 29 seats, while the opposition Left-Congress alliance was ahead in 17 seats as counting of votes was underway on Thursday for the assembly elections.

The Tipra Motha was leading in 12 seats, while BJP ally IPFT was leading in one seat. An independent candidate was also leading, according to the Election Commission (EC).

Individually, the CPI(M) was ahead in 12 seats and the Congress in five seats.

Chief Minister Manik Saha was leading in the Town Bardowali seat over his nearest Congress rival Ashish Kumar Saha by 832 votes.

Senior Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman was ahead of BJP's Papia Dutta in the Agartala seat by 5,286 votes.

BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee was trailing by 705 votes in the Banamalipur seat as Congress candidate Gopal Roy took a lead.

Union Minister Pratma Bhoumik was leading by 136 votes over CPI(M)'s Kaushik Chanda in the Dhanpur seat. PTI

The ruling NDPP-BJP alliance is leading in 25 seats in the Nagaland Assembly election as per early trends, the Election Commission of India said on Thursday.

Counting of votes for the 59 Nagaland Assembly seats started at 8 am with postal ballots followed by EVMs.

The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) was ahead in 18 seats while its alliance partner the BJP was leading in seven seats, the EC said. The NDPP and BJP fought the election on a 40:20 seat sharing agreement.

NDPP supremo and Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio was leading by over 6,394 votes against his nearest Indian National Congress party rival Seyievilie Sachu, it said.

Deputy Chief Minister and BJP nominee Y Patton is leading by 110 votes in Tyui seat in Wokha.

Two of the four women candidates Hekhani Jakhalu and Salhoutuonuo Kruse of NDPP are also leading in Dimapur-III and Western Angami seats.

The Republican Party of India (Athawale) is leading in 3 seats while LJP (Ram Vilas) is leading in two seats. PTI

BJP leads in 26 seats, CPIM-Congress alliance in 18, Tipra Motha 13 in latest trends

The ruling BJP was leading in 26 seats, the CPI(M) in 12, Congress 6, and Tipra Motha Party in 11 seats, as per the latest trends in the ongoing counting of votes for the Tripura Assembly on Thursday.

According to the latest data shared by the Election Commission at 10.45 am, Congress candidate from Agartala, Sudip Roy Barman, was leading BJP's Papia Dutta by 3,668 votes.

Tripura BJP president and the party's candidate from Banamalipur constituency, Rajiv Bhattacharjee, was trailing Congress' Gopal Chandra Roy.

Chief Minister Manik Saha was leading Congress's Asish Kumar Saha by 337 votes.

Independent candidate Kartush R Marak was leading in the Baghmara constituency against BJP's Brigady Napak Marak, by 904 votes. ANI

NPP ahead in 17 seats, UDP at 9 in Meghalaya

The ruling NPP in Meghalaya was leading in 17 seats, while the UDP was ahead in nine, the Election Commission said on Thursday as the counting of votes for the assembly elections was underway.

The TMC was leading in five seats, the BJP and the VPP were leading in four seats each, while the HSPDP was ahead in two and the Congress in one.

Two independent candidates were also leading.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma was leading in the South Tura seat with a margin of just 44 votes over his nearest rival Bernard N Marak of the BJP.

State Congress president Vincent H Pala was trailing by 1,257 votes in the Sutnga Saipung seat against NPP's Santa Mary Shylla.

Leader of opposition Mukul Sangma of the TMC was leading from the Songsak seat by 457 votes over NPP's ND Shira.

Counting of votes began in Meghalaya at 8 am amid tight security. The votes are being counted at 13 centres.

Meghalaya has 60 seats, but polling in the Sohiong seat was adjourned due to the death of a candidate. PTI

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio was leading in the Northern Angami II seat over his nearest rival Seyievilie Sachu of the Indian National Congress by over 3,709 votes, the EC website said.

The Republican Party of India (Athawale) was leading in two seats, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) was ahead in two and National People's Party in one.

Mixed early trends in Tripura

The ruling BJP-IPFT alliance in Tripura was ahead of the opposition Left-Congress, according to early trends on TV channels.

The BJP-IPFT alliance was ahead in 25-36 seats, while the Left-Congress alliance was leading in 11-23 seats.

The Tipra Motha, led by former royal Pradyot Debbarma, was also leading in 8-12 seats, early trends showed.

The Election Commission is yet to announce any official bulletin regarding the results.

The early trends, mainly derived from the counting of postal ballots, may change with several rounds of counting left for all the seats.

Counting of votes for the 60 assembly seats in the state began at 8 am amid tight security. The polling was held on February 16. A total of 89.98 per cent of 28.12 lakh voters exercised their franchise. PTI

The ruling NDPP-BJP alliance seems to be marching ahead to power in Nagaland as per early trends of the state Assembly elections.

The trends in television channels indicate that the NDPP-BJP was ahead in more than 40 seats while the NPF had taken an early lead in six seats.

Counting of votes started at 8 am with postal ballots.

The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and BJP had a pre-poll alliance and contested the elections on a 40:20 seat sharing basis.

Naga Peoples Front (NPF) contested 22 seats and the Congress, which ruled the state till 2003 and does not have any member in the current house contested 23 seats Most exit polls had predicted that the NDDP-BJP alliance would return to power in Nagaland. PTI

Counting of votes polled in the 60 assembly seats in Tripura on February 16 began at 8 am on Thursday amid tight security arrangements, a senior election official said.

A triangular contest is being witnessed between the alliances of BJP-IPFT and Left Front-Congress, and Tipra Motha, a new outfit floated by former royal scion Pradyot Manikya Debbarma.

25,000 security personnel have been deployed in Tripura to maintain law and order.

“Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC have been clamped across the state from 6 pm on March 1 to 6 am on March 3 to prevent any untoward incident, but essential services and examinees have been kept out of its purview,” Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Gitte Kirankumar Dinakarrao said.

A total of 89.98 per cent of 28.12 lakh voters exercised their franchise during polling on 16 February.

“Counting of votes is taking place at 21 locations. There will be around five to eight rounds of counting. The trends are expected to be clear around noon,” he said.

Security personnel conducted flag marches in different areas of Agartala as a confidence-building measure.

As many as 259 candidates from different political parties are in the fray.

Chief Minister Manik Saha is contesting from the Town Bardowali constituency, while Union minister Pratima Bhowmik is fighting from the Dhanpur constituency in the Sepahijala district. CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury is contesting from the Sabroom seat.

For the first time, the Left Front is contesting assembly elections with its erstwhile arch-rival Congress.

In the 2018 assembly elections, the BJP won 36 seats, while its ally IPFT bagged 18 constituencies. The CPI(M)-led Left Front emerged victorious in 16 seats, while the Congress drew a blank.

Counting of votes began in Meghalaya at 8 am on Thursday amid tight security, a senior election official said.

Votes polled in 59 of the 60 assembly constituencies of the state on 27 February are being counted at 13 centres across the state. Polling in the Sohiong seat was adjourned due to the death of a candidate.

Twenty-two companies of central paramilitary forces have been deployed to guard the counting centres, Chief Electoral Officer F R Kharkongor told PTI.

Exit polls have predicted a hung assembly in Meghalaya, as the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) is believed to have been holding discussions with the BJP for a possible post-poll alliance.

The CEO said that 14 counting halls have been arranged in Shillong and 11 in Tura.

Over 500 observers have been deployed across the state.

The Election Commission has banned victory processions till 4 pm on 4 March.

Counting of votes for the Nagaland Assembly election commenced in 16 centres across the state under tight security measures on Thursday, an official said.

As many as 183 candidates, 164 from 12 political parties, including four women nominees and 19 Independent aspirants are in the fray.

Elections were held for 59 Assembly seats on 27 February. The Akuluto seat has been won uncontested by BJP nominee Kazheto Kinimi.

Counting of votes started at 8 am with postal ballots after which counting of EVMs will be taken up.

The counting is being done under 3-tier security provided by the state and Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) in 16 counting centres.

The ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and BJP contested the polls on a 40:20 seat-sharing basis and most exit polls predicted that the alliance would emerge victorious.

Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF) contested 22 seats and the Congress which ruled the state till 2003 and does not have any member in the current house contested 23 seats.
