Ex-Pakistan cricketer makes another ridiculous claim and statement: ‘Rohit throws coin far away at toss’

Virat Kohli cruised to his 50th ODI century, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s tally, while Mohammed Shami made history by becoming the first bowler to secure three five-wicket hauls in a single edition of the 50-over World Cup. These performances powered India to a 70-run win over New Zealand and a place in the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup.

It all started when India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first on a Mumbai pitch that appeared dry, but played beautifully right through and gave batters plenty of joy. The match, however, will also be remembered for some bizarre claims made by former Pakistan cricketer Sikander Bakht who suggested on television that India might be gaining an unfair advantage, particularly through the toss.

Bakht implied that India could be exploiting the toss to their advantage, and spoke about Rohit Sharma’s ‘coin-tossing strategy’, where he throws the coin far away from other captains on the pitch. The underlying suggestion is that India might be leveraging home-ground advantages to manipulate outcomes in their favour. For the average viewer, it was nothing more than a ridiculous statement made with a straight face.

Bakht extended his viewpoint to social media, sharing the quote alongside footage of various tosses in the tournament to illustrate his argument. In response, X users, particularly Indian cricket fans, dismissed his claims as mere jealousy, attributing them to Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the World Cup.

Among those responding was former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra who responded with quote of former American baseball outfield player Chili Davis. Chopra posted the quote that read, “Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional”.

India will now head across to Ahmedabad where they will take on the winner of the second semi-final between South Africa and Australia. This match will be played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata and promises to be another cracking affair between two sides who have been in good form in the tournament.
