Genesis’ new SUV is coming for BMW, Mercedes

Genesis, the luxury division of Hyundai  (HYMLF) - Get Free Report, has been making waves as a major disruptor to the luxury car segment ever since it became a separate brand in 2015.

The young brand has made quite the impression with reviewers and its customers; its compact GV70 SUV is on the Car and Driver 10Best list and the midsize G80 has been awarded with the highest quality award from J.D. Power.

The popularity of sporty SUV “coupes” like BMW’s X6 and Mercedes Benz’s GLE Coupe did not go unnoticed by Genesis, as their new model seeks to join in on the race.

Sitting alongside its popular GV80 SUV, Genesis’ new GV80 coupe is a brand new model for their 2025 model year lineup. This new car features sleek sports car styling, luxurious appointments and a powerful new engine that will put its German rivals on notice.

Exclusive to the GV80 coupe is a powerful e-supercharged 3.5 liter V6 engine pulled from the full-size G90 sedan. In the sporty SUV, it makes a whopping 409 horsepower and a seat-pinning 405 lb-ft of torque thanks to a 48 watt electric supercharger. Models with this high-performance engine will also come with launch control, multiple driving modes and an active exhaust system designed to assert dominance on the road with a sportier, more aggressive engine sound.

More Technology:

Inside, the technology is given front and center attention, as a 27-inch screen combines the gauge cluster and the infotainment screen into a single unit to enhance the driver's experience. Touch climate controls and a crystal gear knob are also placed near the driver for ease of use, and larger cupholders are there to accommodate the largest of water bottles, parking garage tickets or house keys.

Exclusive to the GV80 coupe is a flat-bottom steering wheel and metal accented pedals, alongside other signature Genesis touches like premium leather trim, personal 14.6-inch screens for rear seat passengers and a powerful Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Sales of the GV80 coupe will begin in its native South Korea, and is expected to reach dealers in the United States sometime in 2024.
