Honda revives a beloved name for an exciting electric sports car

In the evolving trope of things that are old are suddenly new again, it seems like nostalgia for the 1990s is kicking in big time and bringing back the good times.

Surge soda, *NSYNC and oddball fashion trends are just some snippets of the 1990’s that have made a comeback in recent times, but one car manufacturer has decided to tug on car enthusiast’s nostalgic heartstrings for its new EV concept.

During its press event at the Japan Mobility Show on October 25, Honda  (HMC) - Get Free Report revealed the Prelude concept car — a sleek, sporty two-door coupe that brings back memories of a model that ended production more than 20 years ago.

Produced from 1978 to 2001, the Prelude was Honda’s former flagship sports coupe, which provided thrills to a generation of Honda enthusiasts. Though the updated looks of this new model suggest that it’s powered by Honda’s mighty VTEC engine of yore, the new Prelude is a modern EV through-and-through.

No specific details about its electric powertrain or battery were shared by Honda, but the Japanese manufacturer describes the whole car as a “sporty” model that will deliver what it calls “the joy of driving,” providing “extraordinary excitement that you have never felt before.”

The looks of the car do match the said description, as the new Prelude has a sleek, sculpted sports car body. The main feature of the exterior is its side profile, as the shape of the car is distinctly defined by a smooth tapered roofline akin to high performance machines like the Porsche 911. LED strips on the front and the rear give the car a Prius-like “electric” treatment, while a small rear spoiler is the perfect accessory for a sporty, spirited drive.

More Business of EVs:

Honda stated that the Prelude concept is a “production-intent” vehicle, indicating that a derivative of the car exhibited in Tokyo may be released for the general public down the line.

In a statement to TheStreet, a representative from American Honda Motor Co. said that the Prelude concept shown at the Japan Mobility Show is a concept "being considered for the Japanese market" and that they are not going to "speculate about [Honda's] future product plans in North America."
