Impact Player Rule In IPL Good Or Bad? BCCI Secretary Jay Shah Breaks Silence On Cricket’s New Innovation

New Delhi: At a time when the ‘Impact Player’ in the Indian Premier League has been lambasted by the players, especially bowlers, the rule got the backing of BCCI secretary Jay Shah. Because of the Impact Player rule, the roles of all-rounder became a major concern, while it proved to be a boon for batters as they played without fear. The topic also became a debated topic among a lot of former players.

One of the most notable names who suffered the most is Shivam Dube. The CSK all-rounder, who has been named in the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup 2024, bowled just one over in the ongoing IPL 2024 and also took a wicket. Despite having taken an impressive 46 wickets in T20s, Dube has been limited to the role of lower-order hitter and often came as an Impact Player.

Backing the innovation, Shah stated that the rule, which was introduced as a ‘test case’ has given opportunities to two Indian players. “Impact player rule was brought in as a test case. On the bright side, it provides additional playing opportunities to two Indian players. Isn’t it important that two Indian players get a chance? The game is also becoming more competitive”, Shah said during an interaction with selected media at the BCCI headquarters on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Shah also kept the option open for a discussion on the matter. The meeting is likely to be after IPL 2024 and T20 World Cup 2024. “But still, if the players feel that this is not alright, we will speak on it. However, no one has said anything about it yet. After the IPL and the World Cup, we will have a meeting and decide,” said the BCCI secretary.

“After the World Cup, we will consult with players, franchises and broadcasters and decide the future course. It’s not a permanent rule nor am I saying we will move past it,” he added.
