India vs England 1st Test Day 3 Live: Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel get things underway

GONE! Back-to-back wickets for Joe Root and England. Jasprit Bumrah looks to defend, has a huge gap between bat and pad and the ball comfortably creeps in. That was a poor defence though. Fourth wicket for Root

GONE! Ravindra Jadeja is adjudged leg before and immediately goes upstairs for a review. Joe Root the bowler. The ball slides on to rap Jadeja on the front pad as he presses forward to defend. Is there an edge involved? Impact outside off? There's a spike on UltraEdge when the ball is between bat and pad. The crowd erupts. It doesn't look conclusive though - the bat and pad are far too close to be sure. Marais Erasmus is the video umpire. No bat concludes the umpire. Ball tracking confirms it was pitching in line and going on to hit the stumps. No hundred for Jadeja. He becomes the third Indian batter to depart in the 80s this inning

FOUR! Make that two boundaries in three balls. Near identical deliveries, near identical shots and exact same outcome.

10:09 (IST)

FOUR! Pitched up by Jack Leach to Axar Patel who presses just a touch forward and hits a cracking cover drive. That's the first boundary of the day

India vs England LIVE

Steady half hour from India. Opting to defend the balls, just six runs in the day thus far. Maybe the strategy is to tire the England bowlers out of the match

Mark Wood pings Jadeja on the helmet. The ball comes slower than Jaddu probably expected and hits him flush on the grill. Luckily, no damage done. The physio runs down to have a look. Jadeja looks fine to continue

India vs England Day 3 underway

Time for Day 3! England take the field, including a strapped up Jack Leach. Mark Wood to open the first over of the day. Ben Stokes and Wood take their time getting the field right. No slips, only a gully in place. On the first ball, Jadeja pushes the ball for a quick single and makes it. Just about.

Anil Kumble on the host broadcast

The former India spinner and coach says the pitch is still not unplayable if you play straight. But to reach that stage, England need to take India's three wickets. And fast.

England's Zak Crawley speaks ahead of Day 3

"It's been interesting and I'm enjoying it. That's what you like as a cricketer, playing in different parts of the world. Australia was different, we had a good camp in Abu Dhabi before coming over here. Pretty similar conditions to that of Pakistan, just that it's a little better for spin here, Pakistan's wickets were better for batters, but we knew spin would be a big part here. We weren't surprised, the boys did bowl well, but they batted better. It did look like the pitch is slowing down and hopefully it'll stay the same today as well, which will make our job a bit easier. We'll play in a similar way, always take the positive option. We'll not think too much (about the deficit), hopefully the runs will come."

India's batting coach before start of play on Day 3

Vikram Rathour speaks: "Extremely rewarding, extremely challenging, really interesting, I have loved my time here, it's been great working with the team, with a great bunch of cricketers. Lot to look forward to still. Some great results, have been part of some great series, great wins. Since WTC has come into picture, we've been made to play on much more challenging wickets as a batting unit, a great challenge when you play on these kinds of wickets. There 's a lot to learn as players and coaches. You need to help them, understand what the conditions are bringing and what kind of gameplans will work."

(Gameplan today) "Score as many as we can, nothing else, we still have a lot of time in the Test match. We'll look to keep batting as much as we can. Hoping that Jadeja goes on and scores a hundred, a well deserved hundred. Cricket has changed, absolutely no doubt about that. The wickets have changed, the bats have changed, everything about cricket has changed, cricket is being played in a more aggressive manner nowadays and I love it. I really enjoy this kind of cricket. The idea is to play good cricket. If the conditions and situations allow you to go and play your shots, they should go and do that. That's what we are doing well in this game."

Pitch report before Day 3

Murali Kartik and KP with the pitch report: "It's a very pleasant morning. England are way behind, India in the driver's seat. We are set for a bumper day of Test match cricket. There are footholes, Mark Wood has created better opportunities for the Indian spinners, especially Ashwin to make best use of what would be a very good length for Ashwin to bowl to the right-handers. KL Rahul felt that it has slowed down. On day one, the pitch was 0.5 metres quicker than what it was on day two. That's a very big difference. It allows the batter to adjust. My view is that it's going to spin a long way and we could see a Test match that finishes today."

Jack Leach with a strap on his knee

Jack Leach has a heavily strapped knee. He suffered damage on the opening day while fielding and aggravated it y'day. England camp says he'll be fine by the fourth innings but the Test could be over by then...

Yashasvi Jaiswal on Friday evening

In the post-match press conference on Friday, Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had scored 80 runs, said: "Of course, it would have been amazing if I would have scored a hundred. But what took me there was my thinking and my process to score runs and I was quite positive in my mind and I was just thinking, making sure I can build an innings. But it was good actually."

"This is my first Test match in India and I was just thinking of contributing well and doing well for my team. When I was playing in the West Indies and South Africa, it was quite a different environment. Here also the environment is quite different. I was really enjoying all the places, of course. It is a proud and honour moment every time I go and play for my country."

On facing Joe Root: "I knew that at some stage he was going to bowl. I was prepared for him. He can bowl first over. But as I said, I was trying my best to do what I could and sometimes I can make a mistake and get out. Still, I'm learning. If I do make a mistake, I'll make sure that I try to learn from it."

What KL Rahul said after the day's play?

At the conclusion of Day 2, KL Rahul said, "The 100 in South Africa has given me some confidence, also having played 6-7 months of cricket since my injury. The aim was to stay positive when I went out to bat."

(on the pitch) "Very different to that of South Africa. A bit of turn, it became slower and slower as the ball went old. Was a challenge, I had to wait for my opportunity to play shots. Enjoying batting in the middle-order. I did enjoy batting in the top-order for a long time, but here you get some time to put your feet up, watch as to how the ball is doing, what the bowlers are doing and it gives time to plan your innings. It's only the second day, we just wanted to bat the full day and get as many runs as possible"

(on the team plan) "The chat was to bat as long as possible and everyone to bat and score as many runs as we could."

India vs England 1st Test Day 3

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the Test series between India and England. In the first Test, India lead England by 175 runs after two day's play and the visitors' mantra of Bazball is yet to pay dividends on tough sub-continent pitches and conditions. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 80. KL Rahul scored 86. Ravindra Jadeja is on 81. KS Bharat scored 41. Axar Patel is on 35. It has been a tough start to one-and-half-months in India. England were bowled out for 246 runs on the opening day with skipper Ben Stokes scoring 70 runs

India vs England 1st Test Day 3 recap: KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja scored half-centuries to put India in command of the opening Test against England with a lead of 175 runs at stumps on the second day in Hyderabad.

Jadeja remained unbeaten on 81 and took charge after Rahul’s 86 to take the hosts to 421/7.

He and Axar Patel, on 35, were batting in a partnership of 63 runs at the close of play.

“It was a tough day,” England assistant coach Jeetan Patel told reporters.

“I think the effort the guys put in were immense. I think the way we created chances today, if they’d gone… it would be different.”

Jadeja’s fifth-wicket stand of 65 runs with KL Rahul, was laced with eight fours and two sixes, stood out in a dominant day for India, who resumed on 119/1.

The world’s top-ranked Test all-rounder then kept up the charge with wicketkeeper-batter KS Bharat, who made 41 before being dismissed by Joe Root.

Root and debutant Tom Hartley took two wickets each on a grinding day for the tourists, who bowled 87 overs after an extended final session.

To add to England’s concerns, lead spinner Jack Leach bowled just 16 overs without long spells and Patel said he struggled with his knee after getting injured while fielding on day one and two.

“I believe he’ll be back in the fourth innings. He just landed on his knee funny,” Jeetan said.

Jadeja reached his fifty after tea and waved the bat in his trademark sword celebration in front of a cheering crowd of over 25,000.

India lost two wickets in the final session, including R Ashwin who was run out after a mix-up which saw both batters at one end.
