IOC Session: International Olympic Committee says decision on 2036 Olympics hosts won't be taken before 2026

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Sunday said that a decision on the city that would stage the 2036 Summer Olympics will only be taken in 2026 or 2027.

The IOC will elect its new president in 2025, and no decision on the hosts for the 2036 Olympics will be taken before 2026. Thomas Bach is the current president of the IOC.

India have expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Olympics, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on Saturday said that India were ready to bid for the Games. Modi was speaking at the opening ceremony of the 141st IOC Session in Mumbai.

The 141st IOC Session is being held at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai from 15 October to 17 October.

“Any decision will be made by a new IOC leadership and not before 2026 or 2027,” Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, who chairs the Future Host Commissions, said.

“I am pleased to report that the number of the interested parties for hosting the Games is in double digits,” she added.

However, the Croatian did not specify if those figures were for the 2036 Summer Olympics alone or both Summer and Winter Games.

India recently had a memorable campaign at the 2023Asian Games in Hangzhou. India won 107 medals, including 28 gold, 38 silver and 41 bronze to finish fourth in the medals tally.
