Jaane Jaan Movie Review: Kareena Kapoor dazzles in her OTT debut, but Jaideep Ahlawat steals the show

Language: Hindi

Director: Sujoy Ghosh

Cast: Kareena Kapoor, Vijay Varma, Jaideep Ahlawat, Naisha Khanna, Karma Takapa

Sujoy Ghosh known for his craft and his brilliant thought process in cinema has come up with this murder mystery Jaane Jaan on Netflix. The best thing about this Netflix’s movie is that Ghosh has done justice to all the craftsmen and not just Kareena Kapoor. The story is unique, engaging and the best thing about it is the minute details that he has paid attention to starting from the look of the apartments to the look of the actors. The way he has connected mathematics to crime calling it ‘mathe-logic’ is brilliant. It’s an adaptation of Keigo Higashino’s novel Devotion of Suspect X.

The story talks about a single mother and her daughter who came under the radar because of a murder that they committed to defend themselves. The atmosphere of   Jaane Jaan is tense throughout from the very beginning of the film as and the whole presence of Jaideep Ahlawat there is a kind of fear around it. The best thing about the Ghosh is that he never said that this film of his is inspired by Keigo Higashino’s novel Devotion of Suspect X. In fact, he was very vocal about the film being an adaptation.

Kareena Kapoor in a still from Netflix’s Jaane Jaan

Kareena Kapoor’s first foray in the digital universe is refreshing where she plays her age and not a sexy- ornamental role that Bollywood generally offers to lead actresses. With no frills and fancies with designer outfits or cakey makeup, she has kept her look completely natural. And the best thing about it is that she has not shied away from showing her dark circles, the pouches under her eyes and the freckles on her face. I guess that is the beauty of the digital platform, how effortlessly it transforms a glamorous Bollywood actress to a real craftsman.

Kareena have done justice to her role trying to show the hardships of a single mother and the stress that she goes through because of her dark past. Most importantly,  Jaane Jaan shows Shujoy Ghosh’s love for strong female characters in murder mysteries.  And not just Kareena, both Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma have slayed their roles to perfection. The film starts with Jaideep Ahlawat who plays the role of a teacher (Naren Vyas) who tries to commit suicide but he is unable to do it because the moment he tries to commit the act, the doorbell rings. And when he opens the door, he sees his new hot neighbour, Maya D’Souza (Kareena Kapoor) at the door. He silently starts falling in love with Maya and loves hearing the banter of the mother and daughter through a hole in the connecting walls of the two apartments.

Vijay Varma who plays the role of a cop has done a decent performance, but definitely not his best. The man who steals the show is Jaideep Ahlawat. Understanding the psyche of this teacher is a difficult task and he has nailed it. His expressions, his body language and his dialogue delivery are spot on. Looks like he has understood the trauma and deep thinking of the teacher. It’s a well-woven murder mystery with no loose end and definitely a must watch. And most importantly after watching Jaane Jaan, the story will get into your head and you can’t stop thinking about it. The film will totally consume you. And I guess that is the magic of Sujoy Ghosh’s work.
