MCA to auction 2 seats where MS Dhoni's 2011 World Cup-winning six landed

MS Dhoni – the name takes us back to India’s remarkable World Cup winning feat in 2011. Among the many iconic moments in the history of cricket, the former India skipper’s World Cup winning-six in the final match against Sri Lanka at Wankhede Stadium has a special place in our hearts. Now, in a pleasant surprise, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) will auction the two seats where MS Dhoni’s famous six landed at the Wankhede Stadium.

MCA’s decision came just ahead of the upcoming ODI World Cup which is slated to be held in India. According to the association’s social media handle, the funds gathered from the auction will be used to provide scholarships to emerging players.

“‘Dhoni finishes off in style…’ To eternalise the glory of this moment, the two seats where the ball landed at the Wankhede Stadium after MS Dhoni struck the ICC World Cup 2011 winning six will be auctioned by the MCA. The funds collected from this auction will be utilised to provide scholarships to emerging players,” MCA noted.

In the match, Sri Lanka posted 274 for 6 in the 50 overs. Dhoni walked in and joined Gautam Gambhir when India were placed at 114 for 3. The former India captain played an unbeaten 91-run knock to guide India home and this included his much-celebrated six.

India clinched the 2011 World Cup title following Dhoni’s legendary six in the 49th over. This was only the second time that India were crowned the World Cup champions after 1983. As India scripted history at home, the cherished moment was marked by Ravi Shastri’s momentous words from the commentary box. “Dhoni finishes off in style. A magnificent strike into the crowd! India lifts the World Cup after 28 years and the party starts in the dressing room,” he said.

Now, as India under the guidance of Rohit Sharma gear up for the ODI World Cup, they will look to replicate the 2011 World Cup success on their home soil once again. The much-awaited mega tournament begins on 5 October. The opening fixture will see 2019 finalists England locking horns with New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

India will kickstart its World Cup campaign with a game against Australia in Chennai on 8 October. The tournament final will also be held at the Narendra Modi Stadium on 19 November.
