Alka Yagnik began by singing Bhajans on All India Radio. Her mother took her to Mumbai as a baby performer when she changed into 10 years old. Her mother persisted in spite of the advice to attend till her voice matured, and at some point of a follow-up talk over with, Alka Yagnik received an introduction letter to Raj Kapoor from his distributor in Kolkata. After hearing the girl, the actor wrote a letter to renowned music director Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar enclosing her. Laxmikant offered her the selection between a short start as a dubbing artist and a later break as a vocalist. Her mother went with the latter, and the remainder is history.

With an estimated net worth of Rs 60 crore, she remains many of the tip-paid female vocalists in Bollywood, reportedly costing around Rs 12 lakh for each song.
