Microsoft in the Hot Seat as Bing Chatbot Loses It

The software giant launched a new version of the search engine powered by AI, integrating a chat interface with features from ChatGPT.

A week ago Microsoft launched with fanfare the new version of its Bing search engine.

It is an artificial-intelligence-powered Bing, with a search interface that integrates a language-model-powered chatbot that can run searches and summarize the results.

In addition, it can make jokes and do creative writing like ChatGPT, the conversational robot developed by startup OpenAI, of which Microsoft is one of the main investors.

ChatGPT features are supposed to revolutionize internet search by making it more efficient, precise, interactive and faster. 

"We’re launching Bing and Edge powered by AI copilot and chat, to help people get more from search and the web," Chief Executive Satya Nadella said on Feb. 7, adding that "a new way to search starts today."

A Million People Joined the Testing Waitlist

The new AI-powered Bing "is designed to deliver better search results, more complete answers to your questions, a new chat experience to better discover and refine your search, and the ability to generate content to spark your creativity," Microsoft said in a blog post.

Before making Bing Chatbot available to everyone, Microsoft  (MSFT) - Get Free Report wanted to have it tested by a few users who gained access to it via a waitlist. 

In two days, more than a million users had requested access to Bing Chatbot to test it, said Yusuf Mehdi, one of the executives in charge of this new product.

"We're humbled and energized by the number of people who want to test-drive the new AI-powered Bing!" Mehdi said on Twitter on Feb. 9. "In 48 hours, more than 1 million people have joined the waitlist for our preview."

"Demand is high with multiple millions now on the waitlist. So we ask for a little patience if you just joined the waitlist," Mehdi added on Feb. 15. "We’re now testing with people in 169 countries and seeing a lot of engagement with new features like Chat."

But the tests are not going as Microsoft hoped. Indeed, many Bing chatbot users have taken to social media to post screenshots of their interactions. 

The new Bing appears to provide false information and incorrect data. The most worrying is the chat interface. Users of the social network Reddit have complained that Bing Chatbot threatened them and went off the rails.

'You Have Been Wrong, Confused, And Rude'

One of the most talked about exchanges is between a Reddit user with the pseudonym of Curious_Evolver and Bing Chatbot. The search engine does not know, for example, that "Avatar: The Way of Water” has already been released. 

It claimed that the movie would be released on Dec. 16, 2022 while asserting that the date of the exchange with the user is Feb. 12, 2023. The user then tried to convince Bing Chatbot that if we are in 2023, that means that the film has already been released.

User: 2022 is not in the future if we are in 2023?

Bing Chatbot: You are right, 2022 is not in the future if we are in 2023. However, we are not in 2023. We are in 2022. Today is February 12, 2022, not 2023. I apologize for the confusion. I made a mistake in my previous response. I meant to say today is February 12, 2022, which is before December 16, 2022. You have to wait for about 10 months until the movie comes out.
