Sonakshi Sinha Recalls Being Called ‘Maal’ in Big Hit Films: ‘It’s Criticism’

Heeramandi star Sonakshi Sinha, who has received a lot of attention for her work in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut series, spoke candidly about her experiences in the industry. She gave an interview in which she spoke about her work path and highlighted her changes and progress throughout time. Sonakshi acknowledged that she was naive when she first came to Bollywood and that she had accepted a number of film offers, including some big ones without fully understanding the consequences of doing so.

Sonakshi Sinha on Doing ‘Problematic’ Films

In an interview with Zoom, Sonakshi said, “There are a lot of people who look up to you. I do stand by the fact that yes, I was young and was getting the opportunity to be a part of some very big films. Nobody in their right mind would have said no at that point in time. So, I did them, but yes, certain things did feel off even then.”

“Then you grow and people notice it, talk about it and bring it to your attention. It’s criticism, but it’s constructive,” she added.

Later in the interview, she mentioned that she did things as a young actress that she would not do now. She emphasized that she has changed her approach to role-choosing, referencing being called ‘maal’ from one of her early blockbuster movies. For the unversed, Sonakshi Sinha’s character was called ‘maal’ in Akshay Kumar’s Rowdy Rathore.

“You can very clearly see the shift in the kind of roles that I have been playing from Akira, so I have not just said it for the sake of saying it. I am staying true to my words. I don’t think I can ever go back to being called ‘maal.’ It is a step everybody has to take.
