Spain: Gang of ex-military men turned robbers held for luxury home break-ins

Spanish authorities announced the dismantling of a criminal ring comprised of former Eastern European military personnel accused of robbing upscale residences in the southern province of Málaga.

On Wednesday, six individuals, including the purported leader hailing from Albania, were apprehended, leading to the discovery of a cache containing jewelry, watches, cash, and weapons.

The gang stands accused of executing 71 thefts predominantly in the affluent Marbella area, displaying a high level of expertise in both robberies and break-ins, according to law enforcement.

Police assert that the suspects, well-versed in military techniques, employed rigorous personal security and counter-surveillance measures during their movements, be it on foot or in vehicles. Their adaptability was highlighted by their ability to breach properties of varying wall heights and perimeters swiftly and efficiently.

The alleged ringleader, identified as an adept in “boarding [vessels] and counter-surveillance,” is believed to have actively participated in all the criminal activities, consistently armed.

The gang extended its operations beyond Marbella, targeting residences in Málaga city, Estepona, and Torremolinos.

In several instances, physical violence was reportedly employed during the robberies. Authorities credit the successful apprehension of the suspects to collaboration with a local businessman, although the nationalities of the other five alleged members remain undisclosed.
