Supreme Court Halts Release of Annu Kapoor’s ‘Hamare Baarah’; Calls it ‘Offensive’, Contains ‘Objectionable Materials’

New Delhi: After catching a glimpse of Annu Kapoor’s “Hamare Baarah”, the Supreme Court on Thursday decided to put a pause on its screening, citing it as ‘offensive’. The film was expected to hit the theatres on June 14. However, it is worth noting that the film is already banned from releasing in Karnataka. Read on to find more details.

Justice Mehta said, “We have seen the movie trailer in the morning, and all the offensive dialogues continue in the trailer. This teaser is available on YouTube.”(sic).” The Supreme Court found the inclusion of “distasteful material” in Hamare Barrah teaser. They also carefully evaluated allegations implying that the film displays a disrespectful attitude towards the Islamic faith, notably towards married Muslim women.

According to a report by Live Law, a provisional panel comprised of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta has momentarily stopped the movie’s screening upon reviewing an appeal. This appeal was challenging the Bombay High Court’s approval of the film’s release, which features Annu Kapoor in a pivotal role. The bench ordered, “Until disposal of the petition before the High Court, screening of the movie in question shall remain suspended (sic).”

Last week, the Bombay High Court gave the green light for the movie “Hamare Baarah” to hit the screens, on the condition that two dialogues pointed out by the producers are erased. The court substantiated its decision with the necessity of equity, the court further added, “The film may also be required to be viewed to draw any conclusion with regard to the rival contentions (sic).”

The vacation bench, with Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta, took a look at a plea that challenged the Bombay High Court’s green light to the film’s premiere. They vouched for the quick consideration of the appeal introduced by advocate Azhar Basha Tamboli, urging the Bombay High Court.

Fauzia Shakil pointed out that the High Court’s decision to lift the movie’s embargo was not underpinned by an ‘unreasoned order’. “The high court could not have directed the CBFC to constitute a committee because the CBFC was a party interested in the litigation,” claimed PTI  in its reports.

In a recent interaction with News18 Showsha, Annu Kapoor voiced his dissatisfaction against those who had been speaking ill about his film. He pointed out how the audience made up their minds about the film even without watching it. According to Annu, the movie should be given a chance to be screened and watched before passing any verdict.
