Malayalam Actor Suresh Gopi Opens Up On an Emphatic Win

The first time the BJP dipped its toes in the electoral waters of Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency was in 1989, garnering a modest 5.35% of the votes. This mirrored their performance elsewhere in the state. This trend lingered for the next seven elections until 2014, with their vote share floating just below or slightly more than 10%. The political landscape, however, took a dramatic turn in 2019 as Suresh Gopi’s foray into this temple town marked a substantial shift in local election dynamics.

Talking to ANI the veteran Malayalam actor rejoiced his victory in Trissur constituency in Kerala. Suresh Gopi said, “I am in totally an ecstatic mood. What was very impossible became gloriously possible…it was not a 62-day campaign process, it was an emotional carriage for the past 7 years…I work for Kerala as a whole. My first pick will be to have AIIMS… (sic)”

Take a look here:

The popular actor, renowned for his gripping portrayals of law enforcement roles on screen, managed to secure a commendable 28.19% of the total vote count. This surge was substantial compared to the mere 11.15% votes that were earned by K P Sreeshan of the BJP back in 2014. Regardless of T N Prathapan of Congress leading the election race with a 39.83% vote share, it was Suresh Gopi’s strikingly close vote percentage to the CPI’s 30.85% that caused some ripples in the Left faction. It’s worth mentioning that Rajaji Mathew Thomas was the flag-bearer for the CPI in these elections.

In relation to election strategies, the BJP hinged their approach on capitalizing Suresh Gopi’s prominent reputation. On the other hand, the Congress projected Murali as a formidable contender against the Sangh Parivar.

Meanwhile, the Left front saw potential in Sunil Kumar as a candidate capable of easing the existing discontentment with the government led by Pinarayi Vijayan. Suresh Gopi, despite having lost in two past elections, spent considerable time in Thrissur, establishing robust links with a variety of community factions, such as the diverse church groups. This effort notably boosted the morale of the BJP.
