Will Arvind Arvind get bail in Delhi excise policy case? Crucial day as Supreme Court verdict awaits

The Supreme Court is set to deliver its verdict on Friday, September 13 regarding the pleas filed by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The pleas challenge the Delhi High Court’s decision to uphold his arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with an alleged excise policy scam. Kejriwal has also sought bail in the identical case. The judgement, which became reserved on September 5, 2024, after hearing arguments from the counsels representing Kejriwal and the CBI.

As per the causelist published on the web site of the apex court, a bench presided over by Justice Surya Kant will pronounce its judgment on September 13.

The case centers around alleged irregularities in Delhi’s excise policy. The CBI had arrested Kejriwal following allegations of corruption and financial misconduct. His legal team has contended that the arrest became politically motivated, whereas the CBI has maintained that sufficient evidence supports the prices.

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan had reserved its judgment on the matter on September 5. The SC’s result in list for Friday shows that there shall be two judgments in the matter, one by Justice Kant and the opposite by Justice Bhuyan.

Kejriwal became arrested by the CBI on June 26, 2024, following allegations of corruption related to Delhi’s excise policy. The Delhi High Court, in its August 5 ruling, observed that the collection of evidence against Kejriwal became substantial and completed after his arrest, justifying the arrest. The court as well noted that the arrest became neither without valid reasons nor illegal. The high court had also granted Kejriwal the freedom to approach a trial court for bail in the case.

The AAP chief became first arrested by the Enforcement Directorate less than the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in connection with the alleged Delhi Excise Policy scam on March 21. The Aam Aadmi Birthday party national conevnor became arrested by the CBI on June 26, while he became in custody of the ED in the money laundering case related to the alleged liquor policy scam.
