NEOM City project was launched in 2017 by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz.

New Delhi: A city of the future is being built in Saudi Arabia. The city’s features make one wonder if humanity has truly progressed to the point of building such a large and modern city on such a grand scale. We’re talking about Saudi Arabia’s NEOM City project, launched in 2017 by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz. This futuristic city, being built in northwest Saudi Arabia, will run on 100% renewable energy. Let’s take a look at everything from the features of the NEOM City project to the challenges faced in its construction.
Project Objective: The primary objective of this project is to diversify Saudi Arabia’s economy away from its current dependence on oil and to create a hub for investment in tourism and technology.
Project cost: Approximately Rs 37 lakh crore ($500 billion), but expected to grow many times over.
Project size: Spread over 26,500 square kilometers, approximately 17 times the area of Delhi.
Why the name NEOM: The name NEOM is a combination of two words. It was coined by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The first three letters come from the ancient Greek word neo, meaning “new.” The “M” stands for “mustaqbal,” an Arabic word meaning “future.” Furthermore, M is also the first letter of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s name.
NEOM features: NEOM includes several innovative projects. These include The Line, Oxagon, Troyzena, and Sindalah.
1- The Line: Launched by the Crown Prince in 2021, The Line is the most important part of the NEOM project. The 500-meter-high buildings will be built along the seashore, stretching 170 kilometers in a straight line. The Line is a revolutionary concept in urban life that prioritizes people and nature simultaneously. It creates a new urban sustainability model based entirely on renewable energy. It is a linear city of buildings built in a line, reserving 95% of its land for nature.
2- Oxagon: This will be a floating industrial campus. Its location will be strategically important. It will be located on the coast of the Red Sea, through which 13% of the world’s trade passes. The city will include an integrated port, a logistics center, and advanced manufacturing facilities.
3- Trojana: This will be a ski resort. It is being developed to provide a year-round global mountain destination, offering outdoor skiing, adventure sports, and an unparalleled tourism experience.
4- Sindalah: A luxury island. Sindalah is designed to be a premier luxury destination for island and yacht lovers. An attractive tourist destination, it will serve as a gateway to the Red Sea while preserving its diverse marine ecosystem.
Project Goal: To create a clean and green city to accommodate over 9 million people.
