The craft beer industry is trending downward for the third straight year, as the Brewers Association said the sector could finish worse than its mid-year -5% volume pace, Brewbound reported on Facebook.
Craft breweries and taprooms have faced a downturn in the industry this year, led by rising costs driven by inflation, fierce competition in the beer sector, and slowing taproom traffic.
Craft brewery industry trends downward
The industry distress led to brewery closures outnumbering openings, with 434 businesses closing and 268 opening for a total 9,778 small and independent breweries operating when the dust settled.
The first half of 2025 was a disaster for the sector, as over 250 breweries permanently closed down in those first six months.
Breweries shutter their businesses
Among the names of the breweries and taprooms that have either closed or will close by the end of the year are Ohio-based Entropy Brewing Company, California-based Strike Brewing Company, Pennsylvania-based Iron Hill Brewery, and Florida-based Dissent Craft Brewing.
And now, 26-year-old Portland, Ore.-based bar and grill chain and bottle shop will shut down one-third of its locations with the closing of its Beaverton, Ore., establishment on Dec. 31. Shutterstock
John's Marketplace closes location
John's Marketplace revealed on social media that it will close its Beaverton location on New Year's Eve, but its two Portland, Ore., locations at 3535 SW Multnomah Blvd. and 3560 SE Powell Blvd. will remain open.
"This wasn’t an easy decision to make or to share," the company wrote on its Facebook page. "Our Beaverton location will close on December 31, but John’s Marketplace is very much still here."
"Multnomah Village and Powell remain strong, and we’re deeply committed to serving those communities with the same curiosity, care, and love of craft that’s defined us for years. Thank you for continuing to support independent businesses. It truly makes a difference," the post concluded.
Location was larger than necessary
The owners of John's Marketplace, which opened in 1999, expanded with the development of the Beaverton store in 2022, but the new location became larger than what the company needed, as demand in the craft beer industry declined, KOIN-TV in Portland reported.
“For more than 25 years, John’s Marketplace has adapted as the craft beverage world has evolved,” John’s Marketplace owner Rob Petros said in a statement.
“The current moment has brought significant change — fewer breweries in distribution, rising operating costs, and shifts in consumer behavior. These pressures aren’t unique to us; they’re especially impacting small, independent businesses across Portland,” Petros said.

The closing of John's Marketplace in Beaverton comes on the heels of Rogue Ales & Spirits' abrupt closure of all six of its locations on Nov. 14 and filing for Chapter 7 liquidation on Nov. 24. The closings and bankruptcy included affiliates Rogue River Brewing Company and Yaquina Bay Beverage Company.
