9 kg of gold jewellery recovered from Sheikh Hasina’s locker, corruption case to be filed
Sheikh Hasina fled from Bangladesh to India, on August 5, 2024.
New Delhi: About 9 kg of gold jewellery has been recovered from Sheikh Hasina’s locker in Bangladesh. This jewellery was kept in two Agrani Bank lockers. They were confiscated after Sheikh Hasina left the country. After the court’s permission, they were opened on Tuesday, November 25, in the presence of a magistrate.
New corruption cases
According to the Bengali newspaper Prothom Alo, the Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is preparing to file new corruption and disproportionate assets cases against Sheikh Hasina. She will be charged with concealing her assets and tax evasion.
The National Board of Revenue is currently investigating allegations of tax evasion against Sheikh Hasina. The Anti-Corruption Commission is also investigating whether Sheikh Hasina and her family amassed wealth through illegal means.
Following the ACC’s petition, the court ordered the freezing of bank accounts of Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, her daughter Saima Wazed Putul, her sister Sheikh Rehana, and other related individuals.
Bangladesh had asked for Hasina’s extradition
Bangladesh had, on 17 November 2025, formally requested India(BHARAT) to immediately hand over ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, asserting that New Delhi is obligated to do so under the bilateral extradition treaty. Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) sentenced Sheikh Hasina and Kamal to death for their alleged role in last year’s violent crackdown on a nationwide student uprising.
Sheikh Hasina in New Delhi since August 5, 2024
Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal have been seeking asylum in New Delhi since August 5, 2024. The ICT also sentenced former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who was tried in absentia for crimes against humanity, to death. Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry said in its statement that, like Hasina, Kamal should be repatriated without delay to face the sentence imposed by the tribunal.
Sheikh Hasina was overthrown after the student movement in August 2024. She fled from Bangladesh to New Delhi, India(BHARAT), on August 5, 2024.
