A new, viral luxury fragrance is inspired by a familiar scent from the cleaning aisle

The world of designer fragrances is inspired by a swath of different influences beyond the luxury labels it bears on its respective boxes and bottles.

For instance, the individual fragrances under the popular "Replica" series by French luxury fashion house Maison Margiela presents itself as being a "reproduction of familiar scents and moments of varying locations and periods," where scents such as "Jazz Club," "Whispers in the Library," and "Lazy Sunday Morning" are all meant to transport the smeller to a captured moment in the bottle.

In the same vein, one avant-garde label is seeking to replicate a familiar scent that might seem questionable for some, but deeply personal for others.

Fashion and art world disruptors MSCHF (pronounced like Mischief), has rolled out a fragrance that smells like Colgate-Palmolive's  (CL) - Get Free Report cleaning aisle staple Fabuloso.

Officially named Smells Like Fabuloso, the fragrance replicating the smell of the purple, lavender-scented all-purpose cleaner follows the art collective's fragrance debut aptly called Smells Like WD-40; which has been noted as smelling "as awful as you'd imagine" by YouTuber Casey Neistat

However, fragrance influencers on social media noted that the smell of the Fabuloso-inspired eau de parfum is much less harsh on the nose and smells like the real thing. Fragrance influencer Paul Fino, known as @paulreactss on TikTok noted that the smell brought back memories.

"I wish I could say I hate it, but it's like lemony, zesty, super f***ing clean," Fino said in an unboxing video on TikTok. "This is the definition of a clean fragrance."

MSCHF has been known as disruptors in the fashion and art worlds and often dips its hands into what its contemporaries would usually consider weird, unusual and/or controversial.

In February 2023, the collective shocked social media with the viral Astro Boy-esque Big Red Boots, while a U.S. Court of Appeals decision in December 2023 upheld a decision in favor of Vans over a parody shoe called the Wavy Baby. In April 2021, MSCHF settled a lawsuit with Nike over modified $1,018 pairs of Air Max 97 sneakers it dubbed "Satan Shoes" made in collaboration with rapper Lil Nas X.
