Amazon layoffs: Amazon on Tuesday confirmed that the company is cutting 14,000 roles. This announcement has startled the employees because it comes after the Chief Executive Officer’s (CEO) initial statement that hinted at downsizing the company due to artificial intelligence (AI). However, a senior at the company stated that this step is aimed at the depletion of bureaucracy and fixing the company’s culture. CEO Jassy justified the statement in Amazon’s quarterly earnings call that the verdict of layoffs was based on its philosophy and not panic.
What did CEO Andy Jassy say?
The Chief Executive Officer Andy Jassy stated, “The announcement that we made a few days ago was not really financially driven, and it’s not even really AI-driven, not right now, at least.” Adding to this, he said, “Really, it’s culture.”
He highlighted, “We are committed to operating like the world’s largest startup,” expressing that multiple stacks of management lead to less-quick decisions, impacting the workflow.
Amazon’s 2023 layoffs
Amazon in 2023 had laid off 27,000 employees across multiple departments like Human Resources (HR), Amazon Stores, Amazon Web Services, and others. Andy Jassy became the company’s CEO in 2021. Since then, he’s been trying to modernise the internal operations of Amazon.
What can happen in future at Amazon?
Jassy’s continuous efforts for technical transformation at Amazon hint at the possibility of future layoffs. The company is constantly trying to make advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), logistics, and cloud infrastructure.
