Animal actor Siddhant Karnick says Ranbir Kapoor-Tripti Dimri’s ‘lick my shoe’ scene ‘unsettled’ him: ‘I am still...’
Director Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal is shattering records at the box office. However, the film is also garnering criticism due to showcasing toxic masculinity along with some problematic scenes. Siddhant Karnick, who plays a key role in the movie, reacted to one of the controversial scenes where Ranbir Kapoor’s character tells Tripti Dimri aka Zoya, ‘Lick my shoe’.
“It is my duty as an artiste to make you feel, it is my duty as a good artiste to make you feel intensely. How you react after that is not my responsibility,” said Karnick when asked about the problematic scene while talking to Bollywood Hungama.
When asked about the social responsibility of an actor, he replied, “Ads where I talk about sanitary pads and say smoking is injurious to health. But when I am telling a story, please allow me the creative liberty to tell that character’s story as authentically as it has been written. Main koi lecture ya moralistic cheezein nahi batana chahta. I want to play a character the way it is written.”
Speaking about the eye-grabbing ‘Lick my shoe‘ scene, he said, “It was unsettling, but I also felt, ‘Wow what a choice for a character and a very courageous choice to make for the director.’ At the end of the day, Sandeep sir is getting the flak. That’s when he turned an anti-hero to me from a hero. That’s what portrayed the man’s psycho-ness. That he is good but he also has these deep dark traits. That was a very fine line for Vijay to turn villain, it is not easy to tread on. I felt damn unsettled with that scene. But now when I think about, it was also so good, it makes you react.”
