Asia Cup 2023 Points Table: India seal Super Four berth with 10-wicket hammering of Nepal

India on Monday became the latest team to confirm their place in the Super Four stage of the 2023 Asia Cup with a thumping 10-wicket victory over Nepal in Pallekele.

Rohit Sharma (74 not out) and Shubman Gill (67 not out) led the way for the Men in Blue with whirlwind half-centuries as India chased down the revised target of 145 in a little over 20 overs in the rain-affected match against Nepal.

India thus collected their first win of the tournament, with their previous Group A fixture against Pakistan ending in a washout.

Nepal, meanwhile, bowed out of their debut Asia Cup campaign with an impressive performance by the batters as Aasif Sheikh’s gritty 58 and a handy 48 by Sompal Kami helped the Rhinos post a competitive 230 on the board.

Also helping their cause was India’s poor fielding, with the Men in Blue dropping multiple catches during the innings, including three in the first five overs.

Pakistan were the first team to qualfiy for the Super Fours after the washout against India. Though both India and Pakistan finished level on three points, the latter finished on top thanks to their superior Net Run Rate.

The tournament returns to the ODI format this year after having taken place in T20 mode in the UAE in 2022, effectively becoming a precursor to the ICC World Cup that takes place from 5 October to 19 November in India.

While Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has retained the hosting rights for the tournament, quite a few matches including the final had to be moved to Sri Lanka after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) refused to send the Indian team to Pakistan citing political tensions between the two nations.
