Australia declares this Muslim country’s army a terrorist organisation, find out why

New Delhi: Almost every country is concerned about the growing threat of terrorism worldwide. In this context, Australia has taken strict action against the Muslim-majority country, Iran. On Thursday, 27 November 2025, the Australian government officially listed Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a State Sponsor of Terrorism, holding it responsible for attacks on the Jewish community.

Decision based on ASIO report

This decision is based on a report by the Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), which found that the IRGC had plotted two major attacks targeting Jewish citizens in Australia. The Albanese government called these attacks “cowardly attempts” to sow division in Australia’s multicultural society. This step is the first step taken under the Criminal Code Amendment (State Sponsors of Terrorism) Act 2025, recently passed by Parliament.

Decision based on confidential assessments

The IRGC has become the first organisation to be listed under this new law. According to the Home Office, this decision is based on confidential assessments by intelligence, security, and policy agencies. Under the new law, the following activities of any “state sponsor of terrorism” organisation in Australia will now be criminal offences. Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke stated that this listing is a direct response to the Iranian regime’s abhorrent actions. It will give police and intelligence agencies more extensive powers to dismantle extremist networks.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong stated that the IRGC’s actions on Australian soil constituted an unprecedented and dangerous act of aggression by a foreign nation. She described it as the strongest action ever taken against Iran. Attorney General Michelle Rowland stated that by taking swift action, she ensured that our counter-terrorism laws remain fully effective.
