Greece Turkey conflict: In a major blow to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s plan to establish Ankara’s hegemony in its neighbourhood, Greece, which has cordial diplomatic ties with India(BHARAT), is mulling to acquire Rafale F4 fighter jets from France, amid Turkey’s growing aggression in the Aegean Sea.

According to reports, Greece, which already operates a fleet of Rafale fighter jets, has expressed interest in purchasing the upgraded Rafale F4 variant from French aerospace giant Dassault Aviation, in a bid to prevent Turkey from gaining air superiority in the Aegean.

Athens’ push to upgrade its air force fleet comes amid Turkey moving closer to a Eurofighter Typhoon deal with Germany, Britain, Italy, and Spain. Greece aims to gain significant air superiority over Turkey by 2030, eKathimerini reported.

How powerful is the Rafale F4?

Military experts have described the Rafale F4 fighter jets as a blueprint for future warfare. The multi-role fighter jet is the latest variant of the Rafale line of fighters built by Dassault Aviation, and is features advanced avionics, a new radar, and upgraded weapon systems.

The Rafale F4 is equipped with Link 16 data link and an indigenous secure communication network, which significantly boost electronic warfare capabilities, and comes with a advanced AESA radar and IRST system, allowing the aircraft track moving ground targets from long distances.

The IRST system can detect low-observability,  stealth targets without radar emissions, and 4.5 generation jet is also equipped with a Scorpene Helmet Mounted Display (HMD) and SPECTRA self-protection suite, significantly enhancing its combat capabilities.

Turkey to buy Eurofighter Typhoon jets

The Greek decision to acquire Rafale F4 fighters from France comes after its regional rival, Turkey, recently inked a preliminary deal with Britain and Germany to acquire a fleet of 40 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets. The deal has triggered alarm bells amongst Ankara’s rivals in the Middle East, including Israel, Greece, and Cyprus.

According to media reports, Ankara has signed a $5.6 billion deal to acquire the Eurofighter Typhoon, a 4.5 generation ultra-modern fighter jet, jointly developed by Germany, Britain, Italy, and Spain.
