The conflict between Ukraine and Russia is ongoing, with Ukraine seeking advanced weaponry to strengthen its defenses. Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy requested United States President Doland Trump for Tomahawk missiles, but Doland Trump allegedly turned down the request.

Ukraine has unveiled an upgraded version of its most lethal naval drone, the Sea Baby. This particular drone is now more than a suicide munition; it has evolved into an authentic naval strike system.

What makes Ukraine’s new Sea Baby drone the most advanced yet?

Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), the country’s security service, unveiled the latest version of its “sea baby” naval drone on October 22, equipped with a 10-tube 122 mm rocket launcher and a 12.7 mm machine gun.

Why is this drone considered a major threat to Russia in the Black Sea?

The rocket system uses the Grad-type MLRS (multiple-launch rocket system) principle, which can target multiple adversarial points of interest or multiple targets at once. The fully remote-controlled and gyro-stabilized machine-gun mount allows the drone to remain accurate even in rough seas.

The operational range of the new Sea Baby has also been increased to over 1500 kilometers, which is reportedly about an additional 500 kilometers from the previous model. The Sea Baby can now carry a payload of 2000 kilograms, allowing it to carry heavy explosives, rocket systems, or a defensive gun, depending on the mission. Earlier, its capacity was limited to 1,000 kilograms.

The biggest strength of the drone is its modular design. Engineers in Ukraine have made it into a multi-role system. Depending on the situation, it can rain rockets on coastal positions one moment and then target patrol boats or helicopters with its machine gun. Both systems can even be mounted at the same time if desired.

Since 2023, the Sea Baby has been wreaking havoc on operations in Russia’s Black Sea. It has attacked the Kerch Bridge multiple times; however, the attack in June 2023 was the deadliest. As a result of this drone, the Russians had to move their Black Sea Fleet from Sevastopol to Novorossiysk, affecting their mobility and operational speed.

Taking lessons from Russian counterattacks, Ukraine has integrated defensive features into the Sea Baby. The Russian Navy had attempted to counter these drones with helicopters and fast patrol boats. The Sea Baby is capable of engaging these threats autonomously. In December 2024, a Sea Baby drone conducted a direct strike against Russian Mi-8 helicopters and Raptor-class boats operating in the Black Sea off Crimea. Ukraine’s upgraded Sea Baby is a threat to Russia but also represents a potentially transformative moment in the military usage and adoption of naval drones.
