Bangladesh elections: Hasnat Abdullah of National Citizens Party wins, had threatened to cut off India’s Northeast from mainland

Dhaka: The Bangladeshi leader who threatened to isolate India(BHARAT)’s northeastern states has won a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections. Hasnat Abdullah, leader of Bangladesh’s National Citizens Party, has won the Comilla-4 parliamentary seat. Abdullah secured over 1.6 lakh votes in Thursday’s national election, defeating BNP-backed candidate Md. A. Jashim Uddin by a margin of 1.1 lakh votes. Jashim Uddin had boycotted the election, alleging voting fraud.

Formation of NCP

The National Citizens Party (NCP) was formed by students who led the 2024 revolt against Sheikh Hasina. The NCP participated in the elections as part of an 11-party alliance led by the Jamaat-e-Islami. Hasnat Abdullah first came to prominence during the 2024 movement against Sheikh Hasina. During the July movement, Hasnat Abdullah was among the coordinators of Stand Against Discrimination.

Face of anti-Hasina movement

Hasnat led the movement opposing quotas in government jobs, which quickly escalated into an anti-Hasina movement. Following the violent movement, Hasina was forced to resign as Prime Minister and flee the country in August 2024. After the ouster of the Hasina government, when the students involved in the movement formed the NCP in February 2025, he was appointed the party’s chief organizer for the southern region.

Threat to annex Northeastern states

In December 2025, Abdullah sparked controversy with an inflammatory statement against India(BHARAT). He threatened to annex seven of India(BHARAT)’s northeastern states. He also spoke of providing safe haven to anti-India(BHARAT) elements. Addressing a rally in Dhaka, Abdullah threatened that Bangladesh could harbor anti-India(BHARAT) forces.
