The state of the craft brewery industry has deteriorated over the last three years, as the number of craft breweries has declined from 9,747 in 2023 to 9,680 in 2024 and falling further to 9,269 by June 2025, the Brewers Association reported.

Breweries have faced rising costs driven by inflation and tariffs, consumers’ changing attitudes toward drinking alcohol, and fierce competition as reasons for their economic challenges.

While most distressed craft breweries can successfully restructure debts out of court, some need the help of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing to reorganize in court.

Craft breweries filed for Chapter 7 liquidation

Those breweries that have severe financial distress with no chance of a reorganization will shut down operations and turn to a Chapter 7 liquidation.

Several craft brewers have liquidated in Chapter 7 this year, including St. Petersburg, Fla.-based brewery Dissent Craft Brewing, which filed for Chapter 7 liquidation in August; Exton, Pa.-based Iron Hill Brewery LLC and San Jose, Calif.-based Strike Brewing Company, which both filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in October, and Oregon-based Rogue Ales & Spirits, which filed Chapter 7 in November.

Bosque Brewing closes two locations

And now, popular pizza and craft brewery chain Bosque Brewing Company LLC has closed down its Santa Fe, N.M., locations, two months after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Bosque Brewing closed The Drinkery at 4980 Promenade Blvd. and its Restoration Pizza at 1607 Alcaldesa Street, both in Santa Fe, on Dec. 3, KOB-TV 4 reported.

“We gave everything we could to make these spaces a home for great beer, good food, and connection," the company said in a statement.

"While this chapter did not grow in the way we hoped, we are grateful for every guest who supported us and every moment we shared in Santa Fe,” the brewing company said.
