Bengal SIR: The Election Commission (EC) has a released constituency-wise data of voters deleted during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, revealing wide variations across various regions of the state, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s constituency Bhabanipur logging a large number of deletions.
How many voters deleted from Mamata’s constituency?
As per the EC data which was released Friday, day after the deadline for submitting enumeration forms under the SIR exercise ended, Mamata Banerjee’s Bhabanipur constituency in Kolkata, had among the highest number of voter deletions, around four times more than Nandigram in Purba Medinipur district, the constituency of BJP leader and Mamata main rival Suvendu Adhikari.
According to the EC data, 44,787 names were removed from voters’ list in Bhabanipur during the SIR process, while Nandigram, the constituency of Leader of Opposition (LoP), Suvendu Adhikari, recorded 10,599 deletions. Prior to the latest revision, Bhabanipur had 1,61,509 voters in the rolls published in January 2025, while Nandigram had 2,78,212 voters.
Which constituency saw highest deletions?
However, Bhabanipur did not record the highest number of deletions as the distinction went to the Kolkata Port constituency, represented by senior minister and Mayor Firhad Hakim, where 63,730 names, the highest in the state, were removed from the voters’ list, the Commission said.
Tollygunge, the constituency of minister Aroop Biswas, has seen 35,309 deletions, the EC data showed.
Among the constituencies represented by the opposition BJP, the deletion numbers are higher than Nandigram but lower than Kolkata Port, with Asansol South, represented by Agnimitra Paul, recording 39,202 deletions, while Shankar Ghosh’s Siliguri constituency has reported 31,181 deletions.
What does district-wise data show?
District-wise break-up of the EC data showed that the South 24 Parganas district, considered a stronghold of Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee, saw the highest volume of deletions at 8,16,047. In 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Abhishek Banerjee had secured a landslide victory in South 24 Parganas by a margin of over seven lakh votes.
Among the state’s 294 Assembly segments, the highest constituency-level deletions occurred in Chowringhee in North Kolkata, represented by Trinamool MLA Nayana Bandyopadhyay, where 74,553 were names removed, while lowest deletions were reported from Kotulpur in Bankura district, with just 5,678 deletions.
The Election Commission said over 58 lakh names have been deleted from the voters’ list in Phase 1 of the Special Intensive Review, and draft electoral rolls will be published on Tuesday.
