In the latest development in the Bengaluru Metro fare hike, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced that it has temporarily suspended the annual automatic fare revision, which was scheduled to take effect on Monday, February 9. The decision was taken following public outcry and a heated political clash between Karnataka Congress leaders and representatives of the central government. Bengaluru Metro Fare Hike: Tejasvi Surya’s Intervention

The fare hike issue took a dramatic turn when Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya intervened. He claimed that he had requested Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar to hold the fare hike of the Bengaluru metro.

Surya accused Karntaka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah-led government of forcing the fare on local people. He said the fare hike is meant to offset “weak finances” resulting from populist guarantee schemes.

Pointing to what he called “arithmetic errors” in the Fare Fixation Committee report, the leader stated that the silicon city already has the costliest Metro in the country and any further fare hike would make public transport unaffordable for common men.

Bengaluru Metro Fare Hike: What Did Siddaramaiah Say?

Replying to Surya, Siddaramaiah and the state’s Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar termed the BJP’s accusations as a “deliberate attempt to mislead the public.”

The Chief Minister talked about the Metro Railways (Operation & Maintenance) Act, 2002, stating that the fares are determined by an independent committee that is appointed by the Union Government. He said the state government has zero legal authority to hold or override the decisions.

Shivakumar, who also looks after the city’s development, said that the board members of BMRCL had not talked to him on the fare revision. He stated that the chairman of the committee is a central government secretary and the state cannot interfere in his decision.
