Bomb explodes outside Yunus’ Grameen Bank office in Bangladesh, multiple blasts in Dhaka
These incidents in Bangladesh are occurring at a time when political tensions are rising in the country.
New Delhi: Bomb blasts rocked several locations in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka, on Monday, November 10. This included a bomb explosion outside the Grameen Bank office of interim government head Mohammad Yunus.
According to police, the blast occurred around 3:30 a.m. in the Mirpur area. The explosion was so powerful that it was heard in the surrounding area, but no injuries were reported.
Security increased; police launch investigation
Security has been increased in the area following the blast, and police have launched an investigation. Officials said unidentified individuals arrived on motorcycles and threw crude bombs. No arrests have been made yet.
Two bombs were also thrown outside Prabartan, the business outlet of Yunus’s advisor, Farida Akhtar, in the Mohammadpur area this morning. One bomb exploded inside the shop, but there were no casualties.
Police and army deployed in several parts of the city
Unidentified individuals also threw four bombs in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area, two of which exploded near Ibn Sina Hospital and two near a major intersection. Following these incidents, the police and the army have been deployed in several parts of the city.
A 50-year-old man was shot dead in Old Dhaka amid the blasts. Police say he was a veteran gangster and had previously narrowly escaped attacks.
Timing of incidents
These incidents in Bangladesh are occurring at a time when political tensions are rising in the country. On November 13, the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT-BD) will hear the case against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Hasina is facing trial on charges of suppressing last year’s student protests. The prosecution has demanded the death penalty for her.
