Purdy’s high school career
Purdy started as a quarterback for Perry High School in 2015 and set some impressive numbers in his high school career. He led the school to the Arizona state championship game in 2016 and in 2017, but lost both times to a rival school.
In his senior year, he led the team to a 12–2 record and threw for 4,410 yards and 57 touchdown passes. At the same time, he rushed for 1,106 yards with 10 touchdowns. He was the 2017–2018 Gatorade Arizona Player of the Year, in recognition of his athletic and academic achievements.

Purdy’s college football career
Purdy wasted no time establishing himself as a premier quarterback with the Iowa State Cyclones, and according to his bio on Iowa State, he posted the best season by a rookie quarterback in school history.
He started in the fifth game of the 2018 season by taking over from the backup who was filling in for the injured starter, and Purdy led the team to a 7–2 record for the remainder of the season and a trip to the Alamo Bowl. He recorded the third-best single-season mark and ranked 15th nationally in completion percentage (66.4 pct.), connecting on 146-of-220 passes for 2,250 yards, according to Iowa State. Purdy ranked fifth nationally in completion percentage (71.7), and threw for 19 touchdowns, tying for third on the school’s single-season list.
At the end of his senior year, Purdy entered the 2022 NFL Draft.
Purdy’s NFL career
In the 2022 NFL Draft, the top quarterback prospect was Kenny Pickett from the University of Pittsburgh, and he was picked by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round. As the days passed into the seventh and last round, Purdy was selected as the 262nd overall pick by the 49ers. The last pick in the draft is traditionally named “Mr. Irrelevant” for seemingly providing little to no contribution to the team for which he was selected, and the moniker stuck with Purdy.
Purdy saw some playing time in the 2022 preseason, but he ranked third in the depth chart, after starter Jimmy Garoppolo and understudy Trey Lance. After Garoppolo and Lance were injured, Purdy got his chance to play in Week 13 against the Miami Dolphins, and he led the team to victory. Purdy then got his first start as QB in Week 14 against legendary quarterback Tom Brady and his Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the 49ers again won. Purdy remained the starter for the rest of the season, and the 49ers made it into the postseason and into the NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles, which they lost due to Purdy injuring his throwing arm.
Purdy proved himself as the 49ers’ starting quarterback, and in the 2023 season, he led the 49ers to a 12–5 record and a trip to the Super Bowl. They lost the championship game to the Kansas City Chiefs.
In the 2024 season, the 49ers struggled, and some fans and NFL analysts wondered whether Purdy could be the franchise quarterback. But in May 2025, the 49ers gave him a five-year $265 million contract, making him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league.
So far in 2025, Purdy has led the 49ers to a 10–4 record and a potential trip again to the Super Bowl.

Purdy has kept a low profile despite his newfound wealth via his big paycheck with the 49ers. In his rookie season, he led a frugal lifestyle by taking on a roommate to share an apartment in the San Francisco Bay Area, and he drove around in a Toyota Sequoia.
In a Pardon My Take podcast, which interviews athletes, 49ers’ tight end Greg Kittle revealed that Purdy bought a home in Nashville, Tennessee, shortly after signing his contract extension in May 2025.
