CES 2024: Sony unveils new MR headset for content creators and professionals, take on Apple’s Vision Pro

Sony has revealed an innovative standalone mixed-reality headset, tailored for content creators and professionals at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

This as-yet-unnamed device, set to rival products like the Apple Vision Pro in business and enterprise contexts, boasts a unique flip-up visor design and a strong emphasis on spatial computing.

The headset is equipped with Sony’s own high-resolution micro OLED displays, delivering an impressive 4K resolution per eye.

Powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor, users can expect robust graphical capabilities to seamlessly handle intricate 3D models and simulations.

The flip-up visor feature facilitates effortless transitions between augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) modes, offering wearers peripheral vision when lifted.

While Sony already offers the PlayStation VR 2 headset geared towards gaming, this new release specifically targets spatial content applications.

Siemens’ Xcelerator platform will drive the software side, incorporating various business-centric tools, differentiating it from the gaming-focused PlayStation VR 2.

An interesting aspect of the headset is its compatibility with a distinctive wearable ring controller accessory and a stylus-like pointer tool for each hand. These accessories enhance the user experience by allowing intuitive interaction with virtual 3D objects, gestures, and interfaces.

Sony’s forward-thinking approach to mixed reality interactions sets it apart from competitors like the Apple Vision Pro, which currently relies solely on hand tracking and gestures.

Sony’s collaboration with Siemens not only showcases an intriguing industrial design but also introduces well-thought-out accessories and software.

The anticipated launch of the headset is scheduled for 2024, promising additional details and demonstrations throughout the year. Stay tuned for more updates on this groundbreaking mixed-reality technology.
