Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, appears to be taking a series of actions that are contrary to India(BHARAT)’s interests. Since Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus took office, his government has been making decisions and issuing proclamations that several analysts believe are slowly damaging the friendly relationship that India(BHARAT) and Bangladesh have shared for decades.

Who is supplying Bangladesh with the deadly SY-400 missile?

Under Bangladesh’s interim government led by Chief Muhammad Yunus, it appears that Dhaka is now reaching out to nations deemed allies, apparently adopting a somewhat distant view toward India(BHARAT). Among these actions are discussions on defense with China, expanded military cooperation with Turkey, and new position changes seemingly toward powers viewed as rivals or dissociation with India(BHARAT). According to media reports, the government of Muhammad Yunus in Bangladesh is now considering the purchase of SY-400 ballistic missiles from China, with supporters of Bangladesh ultimately expressing that it is a deterrent against India(BHARAT).

What is the strike range and speed of this ballistic missile?

In fact, Muhammad Yunus, the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, has made the decision to enhance its defense relationship with China, procuring the SY-400 missile system for his armed forces. Reports indicate that the goal is to further Bangladesh’s military modernization program through 2030, while providing a dependable medium-range precision strike capability as well.

Why is China arming Bangladesh with long-range missiles?

In the past several years, Bangladesh has reportedly purchased over 70 percent of its military equipment from Beijing. The reason behind the purchase of the SY-400 missile system is a recognition that a modern military cannot be effective without a long-range missile capability. Officials believe short-range missiles can provide no real credible deterrence against Bangladesh’s “enemies.”

Thus, Bangladeshi defense officials have reportedly emphasized that this acquisition will enhance the country’s defensive credibility. A report published in Defense Security Asia states that it aligns with Dhaka’s principle of being capable of a “minimum credible deterrence”. Bangladesh’s announcement to purchase the SY-400 missile system comes shortly after the Bangladesh Air Force added Chinese J-10C fighter jets to the fleet.

What makes the SY-400 more advanced than other regional missiles?

According to the Week report, the SY-400, which is referred to as DF-12A, was unveiled to potential customers for the first time at the 2008 Zhuhai Airshow. Other than the Chinese PLA, Qatar and Myanmar have a current operational capability. As per a 2009 U.S. State Department cable, correspondent “SY-400 is marketed as a 150–200-km-range system that carries a 200–300 kg warhead, uses a launcher that carries eight missiles, and is capable of achieving an accuracy of 50 metres,” as reported by The Week.

According to reports, more recent versions of the SY-400 have been redesigned to enable a strike range of approximately 280 kilometres. Each of the systems’ standard launchers carries eight canisters with solid-fuel missiles. When purchased, the projectiles are factory-installed into these boxes and can be kept for years without continuing maintenance.

According to a report by Defense Security Asia, each missile is around six metres long and has a diameter of 0.4 metres. Their weight can vary from 900 to 1,300 kilograms based on the type of warhead used. Types of warheads include high-explosive fragmentation, submunition dispensers, and cluster payloads, the report noted.
