Cyclonic Storm Ditwah: Cyclone Ditwah, which is gradually heading towards Tamil Nadu, has left Sri Lanka, leaving a trail of destruction. More than 120 people were killed and over 130 are missing. Hundreds have been displaced and entire communities have been cut off by floods, marking one of Sri Lanka’s worst disasters in recent years. The island nation has declared a state of emergency. Now, the cyclonic storm is moving towards the South India(BHARAT)n coast and is expected to strike Tamil Nadu in less than 24 hours. The Tamil Nadu government is on high alert as the India(BHARAT) Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued both Orange and Red alerts for several districts. Cyclone Ditwah: What The Name Means?

Ditwah means ‘lagoon’. The name was suggested by Yemen as part of the cyclone naming convention. The name refers to Detwah Lagoon which is located on Socotra Island in Yemen. It is famous for its unique and mysterious coastal ecosystem.

It is to be noted that the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the UN ESCAP Panel on Tropical Cyclones pick names of the natural phenomenon from a pre-approved list of names suggested by member countries. Ditwah means the coastline and maritime heritage of the Middle East Country – Yemen.

Cyclonic Storm Ditwah: Where Is It Now?

As per the latest updates, Ditwah is expected to continue to move north-northwestwards and approach the Southwest Bay of Bengal near North Tamilnadu, Puducherry and adjoining South Andhra Pradesh coasts by November 30 early morning.

Cyclonic Storm Ditwah: What Are IMD’s Predictions And Alerts?

The cyclonic storm is expected to make landfall in Tamil Nadu within 24 hours. Ditwah on Friday hit Sri Lanka’s eastern coast and killed 80 people, with several still missing in the island nation. Ahead of the landfall, on account of the heavy rainfall forecast by the IMD, the Tamil Nadu government has announced the closure of all schools in several districts, including Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Ariyalur, Perambalur and Pudukottai districts.

Cyclonic Storm Ditwah: Schools, Colleges Closed In Puducherry

Puducherry Lt Governor K Kailashnathan on Friday held an emergency meeting with officials ahead of the landfall of the cyclonic storm Ditwah. The governor directed the officials to take all necessary precautionary measures ahead of extremely heavy rainfall under the influence of Ditwah.

Puducherry Home and Education Minister A Namassivayam announced that all schools and colleges will be shut in Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam.

Cyclonic Storm Ditwah: Mass Evacuations And Disruptions

In Sri Lanka, education institutions including schools and colleges have been shut and train services remained suspended in several parts of the island nation. Ditwah struck parts of the country on Friday, killing 80 people. Several people are still missing. Military and police are performing the rescue operations, including the airlifting of 13 people trapped on a bridge in Polonnaruwa, 220 km northeast of Colombo, Sri Lanka air force informed on Saturday.

Cyclone Ditwah wreaked havoc in Sri Lanka on Friday, killing more than 120 people. Several people are missing as the country continues to face severe weather conditions. The India(BHARAT) Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday stated that the cyclonic storm is rapidly moving toward the coasts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and southern Andhra Pradesh. Ditwah is expected to make landfall on Sunday.

The dreadful natural phenomenon originated over the southwest Bay of Bengal near Pottuvil in Sri Lanka and is now moving north-northwest with high-speed winds. The weather department classified Ditwah as a cyclonic storm, with no prediction of it intensifying into a severe cyclone.

Cyclonic Storm Ditwah: Operation Sagar Bandhu

Meanwhile, India(BHARAT) has started Operation Sagar Bandhu to help Sri Lanka by providing humanitarian assistance to the affected island nation. The Tamil Nadu government has issued a red alert for its four districts. The state government has also issued an orange alert for five districts and has alerted the district authorities to prepare for the storm.
