Delhi power cuts: A massive power outage plunged several north Delhi localities into complete darkness on late Friday evening, affecting over 8 lakh consumers in these areas. According to officials, the outage, caused by a drop in electricity supply, resulted in power cuts in several areas in north Delhi, including Rohini, Shalimar Bagh, Civil Lines, among others.
The power cut which occurred at around 6:30 pm, also affected Pitampura, Keshavpuram, Ashok Vihar, Shakti Nagar, Model Town, Wazirpur, Rani Bagh, Haiderpur, Sanjay Gandhi, Bhalswa, Badli, Zirakpur, and Jahangirpuri localities, according to a Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) spokesperson, PTI reported.
The spokesperson said the outage was caused by a sudden load drop of 550 MW in the incoming supply from 220 kV grids, adding that electricity is being restored in affected in a phased manner.
“The teams of the discoms were immediately pressed into action, and restoration work began on top priority in coordination with transmission companies to ensure speedy normalisation of supply by arranging for power from alternate sources,” the spokesperson added.
Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) is a joint venture between Tata Group-owned Tata Power and Delhi government, with the private firm holding a 51% majority ownership in the enterprise. The power distribution company (discom) supplies electricity to over 20 lakh consumers across a 510 square kilometer radius in North and North-West Delhi.
Power cuts are not a common phenomenon in Delhi, however, outages can occur under certain unforeseen circumstances such as bad weather, technical issues, among others.
