Delhi to get ‘Atal Canteens’ to provide affordable, hygienic food to daily wage labourers and slum residents
Each canteen will have a dining room, kitchen, storeroom, pantry, and separate areas for workers and utensils.
New Delhi: The national capital’s first ‘Atal Canteens’ will soon be built near the slums of Naraina and Indrapuri in the Rajinder Nagar assembly constituency. The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) issued a tender on Friday, October 24, to establish two canteens. According to the tender, these canteens will be constructed near Sonia Gandhi Camp in Naraina and JJR Colony in Indrapuri within 60 days at an estimated cost of Rs 31.99 lakh.
Atal Canteen initiative
The ‘Atal Canteen’ initiative aims to provide affordable, hygienic food to daily wage labourers and residents of nearby slum (JJ) clusters. Each canteen will have a dining room, kitchen, storeroom, pantry, and separate areas for workers and utensils. These canteens will be well-ventilated, well-lit, and have proper sanitation.
According to the tender, drains will be covered, waste disposal facilities will be provided, and a separate eating area for women will be provided. The canteens will operate on a non-profit, no-loss basis, and food prices will be affordable for the public. The menu will be based on the regular dietary needs of the local community, especially the working population.
CM Rekha Gupta announced this scheme
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced this scheme while presenting the Delhi Budget for 2025-26 and allocated ₹100 crore for its implementation. The government plans to set up 100 canteens across the city to coincide with the birth centenary celebrations of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in December.
Subsidised canteens named after Vajpayee are already operational in several states. The launch of the ‘Atal Canteens’ was one of the key social welfare promises in the BJP’s manifesto during the 2025 Delhi elections.
