In his youth, Dharmendra often turned to alcohol, and at one point, it became an addiction that made headlines. The actor himself has admitted that he used to drink excessively. In fact, he once recalled an incident when, under the influence of alcohol, he even grabbed his father by the collar—a memory that still shocks his admirers. One of the most famous anecdotes connected to his drinking habit comes from the sets of the 1975 classic Sholay. The actor admitted that he would secretly drink from the cameraman’s stock. Dharmendra shared, “I would sit behind him and secretly drink from his stock. When the production staff told him that he had consumed 12 bottles, he was shocked.” According to him, the cameraman always carried five to six bottles of beer with him, but Dharmendra ended up finishing nearly a dozen bottles during the shoot. This revelation became legendary, adding another layer of folklore to the making of Sholay.

Dharmendra’s poetic response

He was also once asked on a public platform about his drinking habits; however, instead of denying it, he said it poetically. Dharmendra replied, saying, ‘Love killed me, alcohol killed me, and I won’t find anyone else who can match you.’ I answer, ‘If there were no alcohol, there would be no love; this life would be a different life.’”

Despite these confessions, Dharmendra’s stature in India(BHARAT)n cinema has remained untouched. He started his career in 1960 and went on to star in hundreds of memorable films.
