An earthquake of 5.1 magnitude struck Assam’s Morigaon on Monday.
Earthquake: An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 on the Richter scale hit Assam’s Morigaon on the wee hours of Monday. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the quake struck Morigaon at around 04:17:40 IST and tremors felt across several districts in Assam and in Meghalaya’s Shillong. The NCS stated that the epicenter of the seismic activity was at 26.37°N latitude and 92.29°E longitude, with a depth of 50 km in Morigaon.

As per initial reports, there have been no immediate reports of casualties. District authorities have requested people to stay calm and follow safety precautions in case of aftershocks.
Meanwhile, a mild earthquake of magnitude 3.9 jolted Tripura at around 03:33 am (IST). According to NCS the depth of the seismic activity was 54 kilometres. The epicentre was located at latitude 23.67 degrees north and longitude 91.50 degrees east.

“EQ of M: 3.9, On: 05/01/2026 03:33:32 IST, Lat: 23.67 N, Long: 91.50 E, Depth: 54 Km, Location: Gomati, Tripura,” NCS said in a post on X.
It is to be noted that shallow quakes are considered as more dangerous than deep ones. The reason behind it is the seismic waves from shallow quakes have a shorter distance to travel to the surface. This process results in stronger ground shaking, which means more casualties and greater damage.
