Tsunami waves could hit the country’s northeastern coast, news agency Reuters reported citing the Japan IMD.

According to USGS, the major quake occurred at a depth of 53.1 km at 14:15 (UTC). As per reports, the epicentre was 73 km east-northeast of Misawa, which is located in northern Japan.

As per initial reports, the massive earthquake struck off the coast of Amori and Hokkaido. A tsunami alert for up to 3 meters has been issued for the region.

Japan Earthquake: Tsunami Started

The country reported a 40-centimetre (16-inch) tsunami following the massive earthquake, AFP reported. As per Japan Meteorological Agency, tsunami warning has been issued for parts of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate.

According to Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, deadly tsunami waves are possible within 1000 km of the epicentre, which is east-northeast of Misawa, along the coasts of Japan and Russia.

Japan Earthquake: 5.5 Quake Jolted Japan In July

Earlier this year in July, a quake of magnitude 5.5 on the Richter scale struck a remote island in southwestern Japan. The epicentre was off the coast of Tokara island, which is located in Kagoshima. However, this time the tsunami warning was not issued.

Russia’s Kamchatka region was also rocked by a powerful 8.8 magnitude earthquake in July. The tremors led to tsunami waves affecting nearby countries. It was the strongest earthquake recorded globally in the last 14 years.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, an earthquake of 7.5 magnitude hit the North Pacific Ocean.

“EQ of M: 7.5, On: 08/12/2025 19:45:12 IST, Lat: 41.05 N, Long: 142.37 E, Depth: 60 Km, Location: North Pacific Ocean,” the NCS shared on X.

In 2011, Japan was struck by the deadly 9.1-magnitude megathrust earthquake that triggered a massive tsunami and caused widespread destruction.
