EARTHQUAKE: Powerful quake hits Nepal, second tremor in a week

Nepal Earthquake: A mild earthquake of magnitude 4.1 on the Richter Scale hit parts of Nepal on Sunday morning, National Center for Seismology (NCS) informed. The quake occurred at around 8:13 am at a depth of 5 kilometres.

“EQ of M: 4.1, On: 07/12/2025 08:13:04 IST, Lat: 29.59 N, Long: 80.83 E, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Nepal,” NCS said.

Nepal Earthquake: Second Earthquake In A Week

On November 30, parts of Nepal were joled by an earthquake of magnitude 4.2 which occurred at a shallow depth of 10km, making it susceptible to aftershocks.

In a post on X, the NCS said, “EQ of M: 4.2, On: 30/11/2025 11:54:03 IST, Lat: 29.34 N, Long: 81.41 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Nepal.”

On November 6, another mild quake of 3.6 jolted Nepal at a depth of 10km.

Nepal Earthquake: Shallow Earthquakes Are More Dangerous

Scientists consider shallow earthquakes more dangerous as compared to the deeper cones. This is because shallow quakes have greater energy release closer to the Earth’s surface, causing stronger ground shaking. The deeper earthquakes lose energy while travelling to the surface.

Nepal Earthquake: Highly Earthquake-Prone

  • Nepal faces a high risk of seismic activities due to its geographical location which lies on a convergent boundary where the India(BHARAT)n and Eurasian tectonic plates push against each other.
  • The continuous collision between these plates generate extreme pressure that releases in the form of seismic activity or earthquake.
  • Nepal sits in a subduction zone where India(BHARAT)n Plate moves under the Eurasian Plate. This causes more stress, making the region prone to seismic activity.
  • The neighbouring country is located in Himalayan belt. It is the area which is defamed for strong seismic activity due to the continuous convergence of the India(BHARAT)n and Eurasian tectonic plates.
  • The India(BHARAT)n Plate is steadily moving under the Eurasian Plate which is called – subduction.
  • Subduction movement builds massive pressure under Earth’s crust, increasing the possibilities of powerful earthquakes.
