England vs New Zealand Highlights, 1st ODI: Black Caps win by 8 wickets, take 1-0 series lead

Preview: Brimming with confidence after leveling the T20I series in style, New Zealand will aim to maintain their winning run heading into the ODI series against England starting Friday.

New Zealand won the toss and opted to field in the first of four ODIs.

The Black Caps fought back valiantly from 0-2 down in the four-match T20I series against England. The Tim Southee-led side had suffered one-sided defeats in the first two T20Is, but would go on to post 202/5 in Match 3 after electing to bat, riding on blazing knocks from Finn Allen (83) and Glenn Phillips (69). The hosts were then shot out for a paltry 128, thanks to three-fors from Kyle Jamieson (3/23) and Ish Sodhi (3/33).

In the series finale at Trent Bridge on Tuesday, England failed to capitalise on a solid start provided by wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow (73), finishing on 175/8 when 200-plus looked quite likely at one point. The Kiwis would end up chasing the target down with more than two overs to spare, thanks to blazing forties from Tim Seifert (48), Glenn Phillips (42) and Mark Chapman (40), helping the Kiwis share the series trophy with the Englishmen in the end.

The four-match ODI series however, will assume a lot more importance given the fact that it is the last set of matches in the format for both teams before they head to India for the World Cup.

At the mega event that takes place in the months of October and November, defending champions England lock horns with New Zealand in the tournament opener on 5 October in what will be a rematch of the 2019 World Cup final at Lord’s.

Teams:

New Zealand: Devon Conway, Will Young, Henry Nicholls, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham(wk/c), Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry, Tim Southee, Lockie Ferguson

England: Dawid Malan, Harry Brook, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler(wk/c), Liam Livingstone, Chris Woakes, David Willey, Gus Atkinson, Adil Rashid, Reece Topley
