EXPLAINED: Why Pakistan military court sentenced former spy chief to 14 years in jail, what’s his link to ex-PM Imran Khan
Pakistan's former Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) chief and spy Faiz Hameed has been sentenced to 14 years in jail. The country’s military court announced the verdict following Faiz’s court-martial in 2024. He has been a close aide of jailed ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Islamabad: In a major development, Pakistan military court has slapped the country’s former Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) chief and spy Faiz Hameed with 14 years in jail following his court-martial in August 2024. The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced on Thursday, announcing Faiz Hameed’s verdict, and stated that the Field General Court Martial (FGCM) started hearing the proceedings against the former ISI chief on August 12, 2024 under the country’s Army Act. The trial which lasted for more than 15 months, concluded recently with the court finding Faiz guilty on all charges. Faiz Hameed is a close aide of ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is also in jail.
Why Former ISI Chief Has Been Sentenced To 14 Years In Jail
As per Pakistan military court, Faiz Hameed was found guilty on not one but several charges, which include violating the Official Secrets Act and engaging in political activities.
Four Major Charges Against Faiz Hameed
The Pakistan military court has found Hameed guilty in all four charges against him. The charges are:
- Engaging in political activities.
- Violation of the Official Secrets Act in a manner “detrimental to the safety and interests of the State”.
- Misuse of his position and government resources.
- Causing wrongful loss to people.
Is Faiz Hameed First former ISI Chief To Be Sentenced?
Yes, it is for the first time in Pakistan that an ex-chief of ISI has been convicted and sentenced.
Notably, Faiz Hameed served as the Director General of the ISI for three years from 2019 to 2021.
He last served as the Commander of the XXXI Corps before taking early retirement in 2022. He took voluntary retirement Asim Munir became the army chief. Hameed was known to be close to the former Army Chief, General Qamar Bajwa.
Is There Any Connection Between Faiz Hameed And Jailed Imran Khan?
According to the Pakistani Interior Minister, Faiz had acted as a political advisor to Imran Khan’s party, PTI. He also provided the party with “full political support.” The minister said that the military court’s trial clear and fair, and Hameed was given full opportunity to defend himself. These chances include – presenting evidence and witnesses.
